Cool, 3 queens in 1 swarm.
« on: April 20, 2014, 10:01:20 pm »
I just went and got a swarm. I held up comb and saw the queen walking around, I was taking a video of the march in the entrance and i saw a huge queen walk right in.

I am guessing a virgin queen lwft with the swarm?

What should I do? Leave them closed up til tomorrow and go into it and cage one of them and move her to another nuc? Or just let it be.

I would post the video if I knew how to do it.

one of the misconceptions about bees is that there is only one queen in a colony. The number of times when i have found 2 queens in a colony and that is after I quit looking for the queen after I have seen the first one. A lot of old queens don't get killed but are allowed to live in the colony and by the end of the season they disappear. Whether the bees stop feeding her or they turf her from the hive she disappears. Leave them alone and they will sort things out. Cast swarms will unite together so you can have swarms with numerous queens.
Here is a link to a thread on the natural prime and cast swarming process.

But, is there a chance of them splitting from here. One of these queens leaving with part of this swarm.

Jen. do you have Face Book? I just put video on my FB. Honeyton Farms Apiary.

Or, does anyone know how I can post video on here. The queen walks in at the 28 second mark. Pretty cool.

Very unlikely that they will split as they will want to get the new colony built up.

No not you tube, but I just put it in my FB page.

May try you tube later as it's pretty cool to see the queen walk in the entrance.

Actually (I hate that word) you have a pretty rare video there. If you look closely, 2 or 3 seconds before that there is another queen walking out that she almost bumps into.
Pretty cool!

What? It may be the one we saw on the comb.hat, I havn't seen that.

I'll go back and look.

I see her. That's not the one we saw walking on the comb. The one we saw on the comb was orange and stood out, very easy to see.

So,there are 3 queens in this swarm.

Still leave them be?

I'm going to have to take your word for it on this one.  I couldn't make out 1 queen, much less two. But I believe you.

Stop video at 26 seconds. The first queen is in the top right corner. She is the second bee from the corner and she is facing the corner.

Then the 2nd queen s walking into the entrance at 28-29 second. Freeze video there and you will see her walking straight in.

When you have that many tromping around, my take is to leave them alone. Too many possibilities for me to consider at the spur of the moment and better to leave it up to the bees themselves.  :-[

Ok, I agree.

Pretty cool though.

Thanks for catching that other queen.

Good eye, I thought I was good catching the first one.
