Very cool. That is one big tree. Cottonwood? I don't want to be anywhere near that tree when it decides to go. And it will!

That should yield a few bees!  Interesting method of covering the hole. You use any type of sealant or just staple the carpet to the tree?

All I had were screws. The carpet was laying on the ground. It goes probably a foot past the opening on each side. I put the carpet side
towards the tree thinking that would fill the spaces between the bark.

I could look up in the cavity and it looked massive. A guy walked out of house and those things have been there for 30 years.

I'm sure they have come and gone.
