Here is a 2 Footer that I built this morning. I`ve still got to add my top bars and build the roof. I guess it
could be a small hive or Nuc.

Hard to tell by the picture but does that hold 7 or 8 deep frames?   That is a good size to attract them. It looks like you have frames with foundation in the trap.   Some believe that can actually hinder luring swarms as it makes the cavity seem smaller, they don't recognize foundation as comb but rather a divider.  Personally I use one old comb frame and 4 wired foundationless frames.  I don't have any experience to back up the foundation claims, but I can say it is cheaper not using it when you put out a lot of traps.   ;D

Anyway, take my comments with a grain of salt as whatever you are doing is working great for you.

They are seven frames. I did put in a couple of frames of foundation. I wasn't sure what it would do. I also had a frame of old comb and a baggie of lg oil on a napkin. When I first put them out, I didn't have any existing hives and the old comb was from an unsuccessful hive a couple of years ago and that stuff was old. This year, I will have more resources to choose from. Now that I have a little more experience, I want to put old comb and go foundationless for the rest and maybe even some top bar style bars in the trap. I want to build a tb hive and put a swarm in it. If I have standard frames, I will have to mess up the frames or cut the comb off and attach to a top bar.

I guess just about anything hollow is fair game, eh?  ;D

Well then according to my Dad, I should have a swarm in my head! ;)

I think that much empty space would intimidate the bees and they would move on!!!    :o   ;D

It never fails that when I check I dont have the Camera.. the wife used to throw fits when i took it with me so i always had to sneak it and then I never had anything...
This year I bought my own camera, so will, with luck, get pictures...
I have in the past used 8 frame medium boxes, and will be using them again this year. They worked!!!  but as usual, I am second guessing my method..   I am considering switching to 8 frame DEEP boxes, and using the medium frames in them..
The 5 frame deeps I used to use worked also, and i still use them with the medium frames in them, but OFTEN wonder if I am losing chances at larger swarms..
The larger the box, the harder it is to deal with.. Some locations I have to carry the box up to a quarter of a mile..  When a swarm takes up residence.. I wait until late evening.. go to the spot, screen the entrance, take it down, and carry it back..
Half a pound doesnt sound like much, until you have carried it through the trees, across the streams and washouts, IN THE DARK, a quarter of a mile back to the truck...
This is another reason I dont carry a ladder, or attempt to mount the swarm boxes 15 feet high.  I mount them as high as I can reach...  Some spots I can stand on the tailgate of my truck.. and this part I wont change, even if it means I do lose swarms. Last thing I need is falling off the ladder and landing on my dumb head, in the dark, alone, with a box full of ticked off bees landing on top of me....    Those of you blessed by better luck can stick with the tall ladders  ;D

I will have to confess, Have not set out swarm traps in several years. This year is going to be a little different though. I have been keeping track of where swarms are being caught by others and myself, pretty interesting pattern. Four hot spots for myself and three from others are almost a sure thing, get calls every year for a swarm catch. I like to pull up google maps and look for a likely place the bees are coming from (big trees or old buildings) and where I could hide a swarm box, or ask permission to place one.

That's what I do G3.Find a pattern and set traps. It's nice because people call up,[ not in a panic] and say there are bees in the trap can you come and get them.

Just got pics taken today.  They are patiently waiting their next assignment.  Most will occupy the tree stands not being used in the spring/summer.

Has anyone ever used a nuc to trap bees?  I have 2 nucs that my hubby insist will do the job, rather than using a regular trap.  I'm not so sure that it's going to work though.  He wants to place them close to a tree that tends to attract a swarm every year.

Yes janO, a nuc will work.If you check it and they are overflowing just move them into a ten frame. (https://worldwidebeekeeping.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi847.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fab31%2Fjcb63%2Fbees%2F001-2.jpg&hash=bd59b0f42ed90b90c97b1533511b6131edb3c07d)

The 8 frame mediums that I use are about the same size as a 5 frame deep Nuc. Should work fine. Keep an eye on it.. if it pulls in a BIG swarm dont let it set too long before rehiving in case they decide to move to a larger Condo. If the bees fit decently I let them be for a few days, let them get comb started in the frames and a few eggs to help hold them when I put them into a ten frame box.

It will work for smaller swarms but may be passed over by larger swarms.  A 5 frame deep nuc is ~20L  and the ideal size swarm trap is ~30-40L

OK, so I'm worried for nothing I guess.  I'll definitely keep an eye on 'em for crowding, and move them to a 10 frame sooner rather than later.

I wouldn't say your worried for nothing.   If there are more appealing sized nest location in your area, they will choose them over your nucs.   Not that it is scientific in any way, but my experience has convinced me that they will choose 30L over 20L when given the choice.

http://beevac.com/swarm-traps/

However, if they are used nucs they will have more appeal than unused.

I have no doubt that the larger size would be more beneficial for the bees, more enticing!!  But its not more enticing to this old guy!   Did you REALIZE that by the time I get a quarter mile from the truck my little swarm boxes weigh in at close to three hundred pounds???   Seriously!!!     I think they absorb moisture or something!

To be honest, I have often wondered what I was missing by using this size box.. but at the same time, I have to think that if I were to catch MORE swarms I'd have difficulty hiving them.  Farmers like their beehives, they just dont have time to keep them from swarming!

I'm gonna try these flower pot traps this year. Will probably put some Lemon Grass Oil in them. Mount them to a piece of plywood and hang them in a tree. We'll see how they work. Bought 11 of them.

I'll spray them with some water proof to keep them from degrading.

I tried one of those last year:

http://gregsbees.blogspot.com/2013/05/swarm-trap-installed.html

It worked ok.    I used cotton from a medicine bottle with a couple of drops of lemon grass oil on it.  I couldn't get to it for a while after the bees had moved in.  If I had been able to, it might have worked out better.  The bees built a lot of comb in the trap, and I had a hard time cutting it out and didn't get it into frames right, and the SHB ended up taking over the hive.

This year I'll just put a box with frames out so they can build comb they way I want them to.

Thats probably the only reason I dont use those. If you dont get to them quick you have to do a cut out to get them hived.  I also like to let them build in the empty frames. if they have even a little brood it seems to anchor them in the hive you put them in.  Adding a frame of brood from another hive seems to work well too.

I tried to go large last year with this design of a deep and a super:
http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n599/6minz/DSCF4435_zps4d5f9932.jpg
no luck.  One caught a D8 caterpillar but it was not strong enough to hold it.  (path was widened and paved, first box I lost)
here is one hanging:
http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n599/6minz/IMG-20120412-00116.jpg
for some reason I have better luck in evergreens.
Here are a couple of originals:
http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n599/6minz/nuc2.jpg
I did the light green for a moss colored tree. The dark ones work better. I have one spot that has produced well.  The second spot I always have massive activity and when I pull it down with the hot spot it is always empty.

To catch the D8's you need a bigger box,  If you can manage to KEEP one.. your IN the money!!!!

Camouflaged... bees cant see the boxes!!

A lot of it has to do with density of the feral population and availability of locations to hive.
If they have lots of choices its harder to catch them. Do you know of any bee trees or old barns etc that have feral hives in them?

This bait hive is sitting on top of my hydroponic garden.  It had a lot of interest today.  If I can, I’m hoping to get a swarm on video.  I’ve got three bait hives out.  All three are getting looked at heavily.  The bees visiting this one seem to be coming from the direction of another bait hive I have set out a mile away.  Rumor has it, there’s an abandoned house somewhere around here that’s had honeybees in the walls for years.  I’d have no intension of doing a cut out on em, but would love to see it.

I went to scope out a new hive location at a friend’s house and every single crocus had bees in it.  I figure somebody in the neighborhood is a new beek. Maybe they do swarm prevention like I do, I know where I am placing a trap! I was also exhausted at work and took a nap. No bee poop on my window when I went in from lunch and 5 big spots when I left (had to scrape ice off the window in the AM so I know it was not from my bees).

So I have 4 1.4 cubic foot boxes built..  I am going to put them up about 10 - 20 yards from my normal .9 cubic foot boxes to see which the bees will choose. I'll use commercial lure and Lemon grass oil in both..   Not enough to be scientific, but most places I have for swarm boxes require a hike over the river and through the woods.   EVEN if all four larger boxes catch bees and the smaller ones don't I won't be carrying the big box that far, but I will start using the larger ones where I can get to easily...
So just sitting here staring at the screen waiting for spring to arrive...   Someone wake me up when it arrives K?

Robo, In your video, how long did you leave that trap out after it was occupied with bees?

I'm going to set a trap close to my garage this year.  The few days it has been warm I get bees coming into the garage.  They smell the hives I have in here.

I don't recall exactly, but I think about a month or so.

I spotted a swarm on the property last Friday morning.  They were pretty high up in pine tree and I had thrown a rope tied to a stone up over the limb a shook them a few times hoping to get them to at least drop down a little.  I was able to get “some” in a box I had sitting on the ground but they’d just gather back up in the same place.  Lol…..They weren’t very happy after dropping that far to the ground and sent the dog running for cover.  They were checking out the bait hive on top of my hydroponics pretty good so I decided to just leave them to do their thing.  One thing I noticed at the bait hive was that there seemed to be some fighting going on.  The only thing I could figure was that there were scouts from multiple hives checking it out. ???  Eventually, the swarm out back vanished but activity at the bait hive didn’t seem to diminish much.  Yesterday I retrieved a pineapple size swam and got them setup in a nuc.  Today, I got home from work just in time to catch a swarm on video, moving into the bait hive.

Thanks ….All! I was fortunate to get home in time to get it on video.  They’ve been looking at this bait hive for a while.  A couple times this past week I lifted the top and had several scouts overnighting in it.  I figured it was just a matter of time before they closed the deal and moved in.  I came out of winter with two very strong hives.  In the past two weeks, I made 3 splits and have acquired two swarms.  That makes 7 total.  My equipment stash is getting low and the year is just beginning.  I thought I was prepared for the year....I guess that's what I get for thinking.  It’s amazing how fast the bee yard can grow sometimes.  I hope everyone's year begins as blessed as I feel mine has.   :)

So far I have never had a problem with wax moth.I did order some Az bta for my stored frames. If you treat the comb with that it takes care of wax moth. http://www.worldwidebeekeeping.com/forum/index.php/topic,835.msg10561.html#msg10561

I decided to go ahead and build 2 30L traps and put them out a few days ago baited with 5 foundationless frames and LGO.  Now comes the hard part...waiting to see if a swarm will move in.  The last couple of days have been warm and sunny and I did notice a little bit of interest, but the next week or so is suppose to be rainy and cool, so not counting on much to happen soon.  That doesn't seem to keep me from checking on them regularly though.   I'll try to post pics later.

Did the 5 frames fill the box? If not, finish filling it or you will have a mess. They will not use the frames until all open space is filled with comb.

Why all the crates?   Looks like an accident waiting to happen.   If the bees find it to be the most desirable cavity in the area,  they will move in, regardless of the height.

It only cost you $2.80 more,  the base price was $10 higher at Amazon.

For transport take out the screw and put a rag in the hole,or a piece of screen over the hole. The little hole was for yellow jackets ,so they could defend it better.

I caught 63 swarms last year.
This year I will put out around 40 or so.
I bait it with lemon grass oil and a piece of old comb.
I have to do a cut out each time I hive them.

Trap holds 7 frames. I use old comb & a drop or two of lemongrass oil on a cotton ball to bait. We put up 12 of these in different locations around the area & so far this year we have caught 9 swarms. 3 of these swarms came from the same exact tree that I caught swarms in last year.

I was quite excited to try out the swarm commander this year, however, after a walk through the known bee tree locations, I made the decision no tto put my swarm boxes out this year..  Only ONE location still had live bees after the winter. I was quite depressed, as so many of those locations were three to five years old.. denoting survivors that I wanted...   Seems the survivors didnt survive..  Even the bees in the Old Bee tree at the family farm are silent this year...  The first time I have ever seen it empty..      So no swarm box pictures from me this year.

That is sad LazyBkpr.  I know I have gotten to a beetree too late, they were already dead or gone, and their comb was infected with European Foul Brood.  I brought the stump home to make a table out of, used some of the comb for swarm traps and young hives, the African hive occupied the tree so I moved their brood when I kicked them out, and yeah, Riverbee diagnosed the EFB for me in my hives the next year. After removing carpenter ants from it 2 or 3 times I put it at the curb for the city truck with the giant jaws.  All the comb was gone and torched already....

I caught my abscond - no queen cells or swarm cells in her hive, the workers that came home tended the last of the capped brood and did their best to handle the SHB infestation.

But she lit in my swarm trap on the old chevy.  I haven't opened the lid yet, switched them to a feeder lid and put a jar of syrup on it. Knew it was occupied when they threw the yellow jacket out.

Mdunc thanks for sharing you swarm trap pics. and lazy and Gypsi thanks for posting also. The last one I brought home when I moved it into ten frame equipment I couldn't find any brood or larva.I went out of town for a week and checked them today .Ya they have capped brood and eggs. The eggs may have been there I just couldn't see them before.
