What tree is this.
« on: May 26, 2014, 12:11:39 am »
My son walked his dog this afternoon and said there was tree on their walk that may have a swarm in it. We went down there and it sure sounded like it.
It was not a swarm but they were all over this tree. I am trying to identify it. Here is a picture.

Hard to tell from that pic, but looks like a fruit tree. Could even be a crab apple. Were there any thorns on it, even small blunt ones can tell the tale.

Do you by chance have a picture of the whole tree? The two pictures might help. Tom

It is hard to tell, but is it a tall tree or more of a bush? The small produce looks to me like it might be pomegranate. Thank you spell checker!!

Yes, more pictures.  So many of the apple varieties look so similar.  Even a picture of the bark could be helpful.

hard to tell for sure, but looks awfully similar to a persimmon tree to me . . .

Does it have orange fruit about the size of a quarter in late summer?

if this is your first introduction to persimmons, make sure they are almost rotten before you eat one.  Eat 'em too soon and they're tart enough to make a 'possum grin.     Old timers said not to eat them before the first frost, but the ones around here bear a little too early for that . . .

It is funny to watch the cows stand around and wait for them to hit the ground.

I would say that the leaves look a lot like persimmon, but I don't agree that's what the tree is. The "hat" of the fruit is on the wrong side. I have a wild persimmon tree in my yard and each fruit has a little leaf hat. I leaning more towards some kind of apple. And yeah, if you eat these things too early, beware.

Also from the link provided....   And, persimmons rely on bees to transfer pollen from the male flowers to the female flowers in order to produce fruit. Honeybees generally travel a mile from their colony; with perhaps a maximum of three miles.....

Have to agree it is a male persimmon tree....leaf structure etc. From my trapping friends down south the critters like them as much as the honey bees....Tom

They make very good wine AFTER they're ripe. The green ones will really make you pucker.
