Did I make right decision?
« on: September 07, 2019, 10:50:38 pm »
It’s been a few weeks since I have been in my hives.  I Wanted to shift the positions of the Apivar strips so I figured I would do a cursory check on their status.  Found one hive missing a queen.....darn!  Moved along to another hive and it had two swarm cells!!  I noted one of the cells looked like the soon to be hatched queen had chewed the end of the cell.  Touched the cell with my hive tool and to my surprise and delight, out popped a queen and ran off between the frames.  The other cell was not disturbed yet so I figured what heck,
I put the swarm cell into the queenless hive. The bees were on that cell like white on rice and they all started fanning.  There are still a couple beeks in the area raising queens, if this fails.  Did I make the right decision?
And the darn girls were miserable, counted over 30 stingers in my gloves.  I gave up after hive #5!

Good move

That was good luck finding 2 queen cells at just the right moment.  One of my favorite sayings is "Timing is everything."  And how cool is that to find the queen emerging from the cell?

Do you wash your gloves? Otherwise pheromones will build up on them, exciting bees into aggressively stinging your gloves.

Les, just wondering why you would want to adjust the strips?

I believe I read somewhere to move the strips around.  Perhaps the bees like to stick to the same frames and if you move the strips there is better chance they will walk on them.  I only do it once.

Thanks for sharing! I agree, think you made the right decision. It's always so difficult when in the heat of the moment.... that's one of my biggest problems as a new beekeeper, getting over the sense of fear and excitement and performing the tasks properly and logically.
Great suggestion TheFuzz, hadn't thought of that... what do you recommend washing with? Soap in the laundry or just a rinse with the garden hose?
Thanks.

Fuzz, I leave my gloves out in the rain and sun.
