Title: Newbie here
Post by: Countryboyky on January 11, 2017, 03:58:23 pm
Hello and thanks for having me. I live in Williamsburg Kentucky. I am wanting to get started with bees, and have been reading and watching everything I can find for the past 4 months. We bought our dream farm in Nov of 2014. Chickens are well established, and now it's time for my next hobbie as she won't let me have pigs or calves to raise for eating...    lol

 :welcome: Glad you found us.
Lots of good advice to be found here, plenty of experience to tap into. The big bonus with this place is we're all a friendly bunch as well.
Big question....have you sourced your bees yet? Many new keeps don't realize that looking for bees in May or June can be a recipe for disaster. If you have any idea of how many colonies you may want (please start with more than one), find a good source for them and get your name on their list so you won't be disappointed.
Feel free to ask lots of questions, many of us here enjoy answering them, it tends to keep the gray matter lubricated.

Welcome Countrybotky, glad to have you here with us on the forum, and bees are great to have, love their honey and comb. Any question just shoot away and some one will answer.

Ken

Welcome aboard countryboy!  As Perry said locate a source for bees if you haven't, pull up a chair and hang on!  The fun is about to start!  Ted

Thank you all for the kind welcome. As of this moment no I haven't sourced  out my bees yet. If things work out good I hopefully will do that within the next week. I am hoping that I can find a local beekeeper here to be a mentor for me. Problem Being monthly meetings don't start here til March. I will sure be asking a lot of questions as time goes.

Greetings upon your arrival here, Countryboyky.

So,  you've chosen to try bees instead of pigs and calves.  I can accept your wife's objections to eating them,  but how does she respond to the idea that stings come along with bees?   Not trying to scare you off, by any means,  bees are a good challenging choice for a farmer's side line.  But do remember, that all bees (except drones) come with stingers and no real beekeeper can permanently avoid getting stung, want to or not, protective clothing or not.
That warning having been given, rest assured, as the others have said, we're glad to have you with us and will do our best to help you progress along this chosen path.

Never like to get stung but totally understand it's part of the business. Bees will be bees and I will be invading their home so I understand that getting stung is all part of it

It's not so bad once you get past the pain and swelling and itching.

Good sting pics usually result in a slice of pie baked especially for you by none other than WWB resident chef, Chef Unknown!

Welcome.  If you listen and read here you will get along just fine. I started last spring and these guys and gals coached me through and gave me the confidence needed but also the knowledge and wisdom shared keeps you humble.  I have been really lucky and so far have 2 hives getting through winter.  Not over yet but they are still flying on warm days.

Ask the questions, we all enjoy the questions and answers.

You will probably not here a lot from me as I am learning right along side of you but you can bet I will be reading generally about twice a day.

Good luck and we all look forward to your journey

Vandy

WELCOME   Just had to throw my two cents worth in as well...
PERRY makes horrible humble pie. i do admit, he does not often brag, but his humble all died when he bragged unmercifully about his new honey house.. i was SO jealous!  But admit I liked seeing the pics!  he just didnt have to be so smug!
