Iddee's step by step tutorial is what gave me the confidence to try my first trap-out!
-
WOOT! The master at work!!! Got to go get a drink for this.
A frame of brood!! Got it!!! :P ;D
-
Where did you see "A frame of brood?' I don't think I wrote it.
-
No, didnt write it you SAID it... Everyone watching talks about using a frame of BROOD, while you SAID frame of eggs, so I talked about the frame of brood... Didnt want to ruin a perfect record. ;D
-
A frame of eggs means success. A frame of brood may mean failure.
-
Yes, eggs. I did a trap out last summer. I put a frame of eggs and some brood in the trap. It didn't take long for the bees to start making some queen cells. It was awesome! I still have that hive sitting outside. I may end up getting a new queen though. These girls are not that nice.
-
"I may end up getting a new queen though. These girls are not that nice."
i would wait tb, and not be quick to requeen that hive; wait to see how she does, how the hive does. sometimes the hotter hives are the best producers. if it's too hot, unworkable, or you don't care for it, or other reason, a different story. just my HO.
-
Yes, I will wait. I'm a procrastinator by trade. I got that hive in July of last year so they really haven't had a chance to prove themselves yet. I'm looking forward to see what the queen does. And speaking of procrastination, I have some frames I need to put together. Eh, I will do it tomorrow. :P
-
Just saw iddee's video today and wish there were more! I love your confidence and knowledge of the subject. If you are ever interested in doing more, I'll be first in line to subscribe to your channel (but I have a feeling it would be a long line).
-
I'm afraid so. That was JP's video. I was just the subject of that one. I can't hear a video, so I doubt I'll ever try to make one.
-
I about spit my coffee on the keyboard when he said get the stinger out of my ear..........
I agree, I'd love to see him do a few vids, but hes pretty stubborn and ornery. Dragging him into the picture might be a tussle, but the knowledge gained may be worth a few bruises. ;D
-
I know an awesome videographer who is also a beek... :) If you ever get the itch, send me a pm or email.
-
It's like that day with JP. If someone wants to do one, I won't object, but I won't go out of my way to do it. I'm just not that interested in putting my mug out there.
-
Is this the Iddee trapout thread? Got some bees in a tree, they need to go, not cutting down...
-
Yes.
-
In my dreams I have time to read the thread, but only in my dreams. The bees must wait
-
and the bees in the tree have swarmed off into the distance, homeowner says no one home. Working Ponds and Working bees are just hard to juggle, all need done at same time
-
enjoyment and work often interfere with one another. Endeavor to persevere!
-
alright, I have to read the trapout thread, this hive is in a tree 25 ft off the ground, I am SURE not trying to cut it out, tree trimmers asked me Friday if I could do anything about it. not trying a hogan swarm trap, although I do have the box I built for one.
-
Gypsy some tree probers are set up with buckets and slings so they can take large sections of the tree down. Get get them suited up so they feel invincible and talk them into bringing the feral colony section down to you.
-
I will see what they say but not sure I will accomplish much.
-
I've did several trap outs using iddee's advice.
If you do what he says and not try to re-invent the wheel and don't cut corners it will work.
And yes EGGS are the key.
-
I know this is an old thread but-I've screened over the entrance to a hive the night before a tree was due to come down. then I'd have the tree trimmer help me load the section of log that had the hive in it or I'd wait & open the log up after they left.
-
This is an old thread that I had not seen, but I enjoyed it so much that I watched it twice and intend to watch it again. I was already impressed with Iddee's knowledge of bees, but this video convinced me that he was farther up the learning curve than I had imagined. Wow, what a lot of good information. It makes me jealous of his knowledge, but not jealous enough to study that much. Iddee is a bee master.
-
Indeed he is, just dont stand in his light!
-
Iddee, I watched this last year when I attempted my first trap out (too late in the process :-[ ). I tried to watch it again yesterday, but I keep getting a 404 error. Am I doing something wrong or is the link broken? I found the info incredibly helpful as I'm sure most newbees would :) :) :)
-
Try it again and let me know if it works now.
-
Thanks Iddee, it DOES work now
-
@Iddee:
I see how the trap-out works, and I have two places to set up a trap-out come next spring. My question is: what happens to the old queen? The trap-out is catching her foragers; therefore, she and the nurse bees will run out of nectar. Do they starve, or will they abscond prior to starvation?
-
They will abscond with the last of the bees.
-
I really enjoyed this and feel confident to try a trap out now. Thanks
-
Should be fun trying. Loved the video!
-

Typically once the number of bees she has with her declines far enough she will take those remaining bees and abscond.
(Never mind was already answered)
The hardest thing to do is have patience during a trap out. The second hardest thing to do is to make sure the bees don't find or make another exit.
-
Hi folks,
I know this is an old thread but it is pinned...I'm trying to get to the threads linked in Idee's first post and I get a 403 error.
Anyone know how to get to them?
-
Here are the new links to the original posts the Pictures in the post are on photo bucket so unless you are subscribed yo will not be able to see them. Apis

The new links work, thank you.
-
Iddee is still our Rock Star!
-
The new updated links could be copy and past into the first original Iddee post and then they would work, for new beekeepers finding this thread. But need some one with Administrative privileges to do it.
-
thank you apis, i copied, pasted the new updated links to iddee's first post.
thanks for taking the time to hunt the threads down and update the links!
-
The links and location where there, they just needed to be modified to conform to this new hosting site. Now if someone is paying for photo bucket and willing to copy and download the missing photos, those threads could be restored.
-
probably not going to happen keith.......photobucket wants too much money.........
-
Does photo bucket still give people access to their own photos that people have uploaded to their site with out a subscription?
-
yes, i have a photobucket account and can access it, with nag screens and the account is essentially worthless for sharing photos unless you pay. i am not willing to pay them.
-
It is good to know that photos posted on photo bucket are not lost for ever to the owner of them. Some important photos could be downloaded by the original poster and re-downloaded to image post.
-
i restored iddee's photos on these threads. ;D
-
Thanks River
-
I tried to get on there to get my own pics and finally gave up... Kinda surprised someone at photobucket doesn't have a black eye over this... Wait, is my hickerbilly showing?
-
scott, pb removed the download album button, but you can still get your photos off, requires clicking on the photo, r click, save image as. this is a pita if you have a lot of photos.
i utilized a program that downloaded all of my photos off pb in one fell swoop, preserving the file names and albums they were in. took about 5 minutes i think. ;D
-
Lazy PM river you PB user name and Password, Let her get them off for you. It sounds like she has it all figured out. She managed to get Iddee's picts from his trap out posts off PB.
-
I will have to give it a try first, and see what I can do. I am assuming that won't work for the vids I have on there.
-
apparently photobucket received many complaints about folks not being to 'download' their own pictures.
instructions here:
COPY OR DOWNLOAD A PHOTO OR VIDEO (https://support.photobucket.com/hc/en-us/articles/200724174-Copy-or-Download-a-Photo-or-Video?hotlinkfix=1522854841372)
one at a time.....and videos must be mp4 format. ( i could probably get them off if they weren't).
maybe i need to start a thread on this.
-
Mr. Wizard, in the video below the 5 links, who is the guy that filmed that video? JP something?
If we decide to do a cut out instead, JP has good youtubes on cut outs.
-
JPthebeeman. He has many videos on youtube. He and I have been working together for many years.
-
JP seems like a good egg, probably because he has been hanging around YOU Iddee.. one day I hope I get to buy him a beer.
