Well, we had our Nova Scotia Beekeeping Association AGM meeting today, and the guest speaker was Dennis vanEngelsdorp.
I have been a big follower of his since the whole CCD outbreak happened and his Ted TV talk (that I have used on a presentation or two). It was a really good meeting, well attended (but room for growth). Dennis was his usual self, holding court in the most easy manner you can imagine. Door prizes were plenty (I won 2 cases of hex jars), lots of good gift certificates, some a $100! :)
Elections were held and I am now the Vice-President of the Association. A friend down the road and I fought over who would be President and I won!, he's the President. Neither of us has any experience at it so we agreed to work together on both positions.
I wish I took better pictures, I guess I should get a better camera.

At the end of it I went up to Dennis, shook his hand and thanked him, handed him a sharpie, and started unbuttoning my work shirt! Dennis looked at me wondering what the heck I was up to! ???
I spun around and dropped the shirt off the back of my shoulders and when he spotted what was there he thought it was hilarious. He signed it for me and said that in all his lectures that was a first! :)
I will say this, when people meet me they usually don't realize what they're up against!

congrads on the the position. I seem to get myself elected to vice president of this group or that and I now think being number 2 is really the very best place to be.
-
Perry, you are going to be one busy man with this added to all your other bee duties. :o
-
My own bee stuff (which has grown a lot in the last year or two), inspections a real possibility again this year, Vice-Pres. of the Provincial Association now, and of course this place. I'm pretty happy about it all. ;)

perry, you will do well, a great honor for you, and you are a great inspiration to other beeks.
just remember, if you disappear from here for too long, there will be a posse of us out looking for you..... ;).... :D

Oh no no no no no! :D
I'm not leaving here, anyone thinking they can get rid of me that easily is sorely mistaken! ;)
I'd give something else up first.

What happened to the last years vice president? In most volunteer organizations they like to groom the vice to take over the post of president. It allows for a smother transition and less time to figure things out. Congrats and I know you will encourage support and growth of the association as you do on this forum.
The last words out of the wife's mouth any time I head off to a meeting is "When it come time for elections sit on your hands."

The Association has had a very difficult time recruiting volunteers onto the board.
The exiting President wasn't interested in continuing in any manner (which was actually a huge relief to most I suspect). The Vice President was actually the former President who only filled the position because nobody else would, and the poor Past President is still on the hook as the exiting President won't even serve there.
Most of these folks have served far longer than was intended or expected, and with the exception of the exiting President a deep gratitude is owed to them all.
I don't know why something like volunteering has become such a dirty word as of late but it truly seems to be. I guess people are just so wrapped up in their busy lives that they just cannot spare the time?
I don't know if Joe (the new President) and I can effect any change, but it sure won't be for lack of trying.

I hear you! I have been president of the local association, have coordinated conventions and now look after the honey judging and display at the fair. When asked about being president at the club again (that is not that challenging of a position), I declined and offered to support a newer member in taking on the position. It's not good to have one guy taking on all the positions, the impression it gives to new people coming in is it is so and so's bee club rather than an association. I also look after the club Library.

You could always give everyone a gift membership subscription to this forum! ;)
