Title: Lemon Grass Oil
Post by: LazyBkpr on December 08, 2013, 08:08:19 pm
I can ORDER lemon Grass Oil.. but I can buy Pure lemon extract at local stores.. whats the difference? Do the bees care?

the pure lemon extract is actually not so "PURE"...    Alcohol 84% Water, and Oil of Lemon..
Usually use purchased swarm trap lure and lemon grass oil at the entrance..     Just wondering if the pure lemon extract could work as a replacement for the lemongrass oil??   Anyone tried it?

I would suppose the main difference lemon grass oil is pressed from plant material.  Lemon extract is juice from the fruit.  While Lemon is pretty dern strong, I would think it's zest would be even stronger.  But, both would diminish much quicker than lemon grass oil.  That stuff is potent!  I don't of any studies or experiments using lemon extract.   I would say it's just as easy and prudent to order a nice, affordable bottle online.  I bought mine on Amazon last year and have been happy with it:

Never tried it, do carry the oil around and a baggie of Q-tips. Look around the health food stores or bakery shops, a small bottle will last a couple of years.

We were catching a swarm a couple of years ago and there was a lemon slice in the road that had been run over and some of the bees kept migrating towards it.

Some take old queens that they have pinched and drop them into a small bottle of alcohol to get the pheromones, dip in a Q-tip to spread it.

We did a cut out once and my buddy had a queen catcher clip that a queen had been in a couple of days before, you guessed it bees came running for it. Pheromones are powerful and must last for some time.

Totally two different plants and as already said the extracts are from different parts of the plants as well.

Lemon grass is just that-  a fleshy grass almost like small bamboo, the base of the stalks are swollen and used for cooking , and the oil is extracted from that part.

I ran a swarm call at west towne mall where a swarm landed in the parking lot on a lemon slice.  I was there within 30 mins of getting the call. Once I got there they said we just ran over them with the truck. There they are. Can you get them?  I said nope, ain't got no use for a pile of flat bees!
I'm on my phone and can't figure out how to embed the you tube link. It's still up, under older dairy bldg cut out if you wanna post it. What u are talking about is around the 7:30 min mark.

Those bees would follow the queen clip around where ever we moved it.

Still have that hive of bees too. Had a blast doing that cut out with you JM, hope to do some this year.

lazy, what operating system do you have?  windows?  if you have a windows pc, try windows movie maker, i have two versions of it i use, it works well to edit out what you don't want and add other effects.

windows live movie maker here also. Pretty basic but gets the job done. What kills me is the upload time, sometimes a couple of hours per video.

you can get lemongrass oil from this place pretty reasonable. Is there any difference in this and the small vials you buy from bee supply houses
