About a week ago I was approached by the Wolfville Library to do a presentation, and as a follow up I received this.:
Subject: Wolfville Library
Message: Hi Perry,
We spoke on the phone about presenting at the Library this summer, and I have another question for you. We have a budget for our Pollinator Project to purchase new books and videos for the Library collection and wonder if you have any recommendations. Thanks for any advice.
I thought, "Who better to turn to for ideas than my friends here"?
So, throw them out there. I know there have been discussions on beekeeping books, but what do you believe would be good books and videos, to have in a public library system?
-
There is a good BBS document series on planting bee friendly plants and how they got city's to plant flower meadows rather than having grass that requires constant cutting.

i guess my question is, specifically what type of books geared to what type of reader and for what the library would desire? like beekeeper, gardner, etc?
-
Queen of the Sun movie?
-
I guess I would look at the books I have and think which of them was the most interesting and go with that.
Beginning beekeeping books are always good to have at the library, there are quite a few of those out there to choose from.
-
Videos:
- Vanishing of the bees
- More Tham Honey
-
I would suggest something written by a Canadian author or someone from the northern part of the US. Their writing would be more relevant to the readers.
Perry, one of your favorite authors, Richard Taylor comes to mind. He was from New England.
Natural Beekeeping by Ross Conrad. He's from Vermont.
I also like this book for a beginner First Lessons in Beekeeping by Keith Delaplane.
Video: Vanishing of the Bees 2009 narrated by Ellen Page.

Here is a book that is for the juniors section. It is somewhat informative (kids level) and has some of the best pictures of bees I have ever seen.
Here are a few pages from the book.

I am going to forward that book to the library Apis, it looks good. :agree:
As for Following the Bloom, I think I may pick that one up for myself. ;)

One of the books of my 86 year old buddy (who passed away last year) that i bought at the auction is ABC OF BEE CULTURE, by A.I. Root, Medina, Ohio 1890. Very interesting, this was back in horse and buggy days and has pictures of making hives, frames, foundation making, Tools, machines, all hand operated :o no electricity. Everything they knew about bees back then that sounds funny today, like they said, the bees Light Out, instead of Absconding. :D This is going to make for some good reading, of course tec and iddee probably read it growing up. Jack

abc xyz is a great book from whatever year......i have a few of these...... :D earliest is 1908, pretty cool.

So far:
Videos:
Vanishing of the Bees -2009 narrated by Ellen Page
More than Honey
Tales from the Hive – Nova
The Ailing Queen – A great local film (made in Quebec, subtitled) I have it if you would be interested in viewing first.
Books:
The Joys of Beekeeping – Richard Taylor
Beekeeping for Dummies – Blackiston
The Backyard Beekeeper – Flottum
For Pollinators in general, there is this series done in Britain that is really quite good. I am not sure how to obtain them.

BBC.Bees.Butterflies.and.Blooms Part 2 http://youtu.be/PEGmPTV5ZHc
BBC.Bees.Butterflies.and.Blooms Part 3 http://youtu.be/XpTO0ihTMt8
If there is any additional books or videos you think might be interesting, let me know and I can try to help out.
Regards
This, plus the book that Apis posted in a second email.

Hey Squirt, this was ABC of Bee Culture, 1890 by A.I. Root, bet there's not many of them around. One fellow got there late and offered me a good price for it, more than i gave for the whole box of 14 books. I tool his phone number and told him i would call him if i decided to sell it. I think howard had told me it was his fathers (who was a beekeeper also) i think he was 94 or 96 when he died. Jack

jack, abc of bee culture a i root (abc xyz of bee culture), is the book that's been published since i think, hmmm, the first edition might have been 1877?
i think blueblood has one from the late 1800's, and yes you are right, there ain't many of them around, and when you go poking around for them on the internet, they sell anywhere between 300 and 600 bucks. i'd like to have some of the earlier copies, so i am always looking.
i'd hang onto that 1890 edition, it was your friend howard's, would have some sentimental value to me. but i'd give you more money than the other fella would just cuz....... :D
does your cover on that 1890 edition look like this?

Excellent apis- I didn't think about kids. Glad you did.
-
Yep, that's it Rb. Jack
-
I have made some posters for the beekeeping display at the fair from some or the pages in the book because of the inc readable photos in it and the wright-ups are brief but informative.

Perry here is a link to the local library system and the books that are listed under honey bees. Look thru it as it has for all ages in both fiction and nonfiction categorys. Our Library system covers library's from USA boarder up to Revelstoke and so any book in the system can be requested and it will be shipped to the local library.

"Yep, that's it Rb. Jack"
thanks jack, looking to buy this one from 1890, what a treasure.
sorry all, now back to books and videos, i could add infinitude to the list, but not sure what the library's looking for, two books i would reccommend is the beekeepers handbook, (Diana Sammataro, Alphonse Avitabile ) and the biology of the honey bee (mark winston).

I got to see Mark Winston's lab at SFU on a field day. They were doing varroa attractant tests with glass tubes with a Y in them. He was a bee genius.
I watched the 1 hour program when he hung it up. A lot of tears in the audience (him too).
