Title: Old combs
Post by: Marty68 on March 21, 2014, 02:23:53 pm
So I have a few frames of old dark comb, I sprayed them out and now putting them into freezer for a cpl days to kill what didn't get cleaned out. I also scraped off the stuff that got gooey so it leaves a spot for them to rebuild. Question is are they still worth using and for what can I use them for before I put them into a hive and kill my bees.

It all depends on what the hive they came out of was like. Was it a dead-out? Did it die of some disease? If nothing else you can use it as bait comb in a swarm trap if there is any doubt.
Any pics?

when I finally get these medium frames out of my deep brood chamber, they are all waxed up there are older than Moses. I don't know how much wax is actually still there lol comb are a dingy almost black grey.

I will take a pic of them tomorrow and let you see. Some aren't bad. At least I can use the for swarm traps. Ok once I get a swarm in it and they settle in how do I get the bees out of it when I put into a new hive body. Put it in and slowly work it to the outside. Not sure lol need some help. Ty

That will work or move it up above the excluder.

Once I put into reg. hive with new frames, give them a chance to build dbl deep boxes then rotate to top once queen starts laying in top box with excluder. But give them time to build up second box.
