Title: Got an uncapper!
Post by: Perry on March 26, 2014, 02:54:01 pm
Well, in the middle of a hurricane force snowstorm it actually arrived.
I have been looking for a decent and affordable way to uncap honey frames and I finally think I found it. I was looking at one of those Kelly's vibrating jiggle knives for $535, but when the price jumped to $628 in the new year I gave it up. While searching and prowling around, I came across a google conversation about them. I got in contact with someone who had one and he said he wasn't using it anymore. He offered it to me for $100!  :)
It was in Missouri and I knew shipping would be a killer, but at that price I had to do it. Well, turns out when he took it to be shipped (UPS) they wanted it re-packaged in their box, and the shipping was $100 more than the original quote. He felt bad about it so shipped it anyways and told me I could have it for $50 and we would split the extra shipping cost!  8)
Don't ever let anyone tell you that beekeeper's aren't generous to a fault.  ;)
Well, like I said today it arrived and the only fly in the ointment was a COD charge for taxes and brokerage fees of $60. I opened it up and am happy to report there is no damage at all and I have solved one of the last pieces of my extracting room puzzle.

My "Thanks" go out to Grant Gillard (author of 25hives) of Missouri, for taking the time to give me such a good deal. I will at some time try and pay it forward.

I bet it would have been cheaper to have him ship to me to the parsel drop I use across the line. Being it across and then ship it to you. The cross boarder shipping is expensive, and the taxes are not a major expense but the customs broker needed to do the little paper work is more expensive than the taxes.

Good find Perry need to mount it over the spinner in such a way that it is easily removable or doesn't interfere with emptying the cappings

Apis has posted a video of one in use. It is steam heated but seemed to work really slick.

I agree Keith, I will have to figure out how to mount it directly over the spinner to make it even more efficient.

Extra sweet deal!! I bet you were grinning from ear to ear.

Sure was nice of him to do that, but then that is a beekeep for ya.

Is that one steam or electric?

awesome find!  If you come across another one give me a ring.  In fact, if you find another deal in the States let me know.  I'm sure we can work something out.

Electric. I don't know if they even make steam ones anymore, or how to ever find one for sale.

Mount it with a hing so it can be tilted back out of the way of swung sideways, and use a pin to keep it in position when using it.

Hey Keith, I hunted all over for that video again. I can't seem to find it. If you can find it, could you please you put it up again?

i think he has the maxent mini wax spinner and it looks like the opening is further away and leaves the close side more open for removing the cappings.

Thanks Keith. I counted about 20 seconds for him to do that frame.
Mine is heated electrically, and I don't know if they recommend mounting it vertically or not. It could present a problem uncapping directly into the spinner.

Awesome find! I've been chatting back and forth with Grant on facebook on occasion, seems like a super nice guy, hoping to meet him soon at a queen rearing class in St Louis.

I have only ever seen them mounted vertically and all i have seen have been mounted so the cappings fall directly into the spinner. most of the old spinners were the size of an 30 frame extractor close to 4 ft in diameter with the jiggle knife mounted off the top center real \ bearing support and the lid on the back half of the spinner opened to allow easy access to remove the dry cappings.

Wow, now that is awesome!
I may just have to fire up the lathe and build one of those...  I wonder how well a hot knife would stand the vibration?? It's just an element in the blade right?

Excellent find Perry, and great story to go with it. I too look forward to seeing it in action.

here is an electric Kelly mounted so the frame is pulled down. Looks harder than when it is vertical and the frame is held at a constant height.

Here are some pictures of one mounted flat but he is bent over while uncapping would be tiring on your not so young back

I run mine horizontally.  fits nicely on a drip rack/basi.  I do have a perferrated (sp all wrong, but what the heck) stainless steel 'tray' that sets under the uncapper and captures and allows the cappings to drain.  I suspect whatever you might mount this to would requires some small or modest modification since fitting square to round or sometimes even square to square almost always requires some form of transition device.

I think mounting this over my cappings spinner could only be done easily if it was mounted vertically. They don't seem to recommend it being used that way though? I wonder what the reasoning is for that, as it sure seems easy in that video Apis posted.
