Title: Inspection on my swarm Hive
Post by: skeeterhawk1960 on March 31, 2014, 08:02:42 pm
I decided to check on my swarm that I installed, yesterday was a week ago. Cut a little burr comb or whatever you call it. They were really nice. You can work them with out any smoke or protection, unlike my other hive.

Sounds like a good score all around.

No, you cannot work them without smoke. You might one, twice, or ten times, but one day you will have ten to fifty stings within 3 seconds of popping the top.

Please don't do it.

I recommend having the smoker ready. They ARE female, one day they will get you!

A couple years back I had a hive that I needed to find the queen in. Two deeps and a medium, boiling with bees. This was a queen I started 3 week before the blackberry bloom. She had been good up til now but I raised enough drone layers to recognize it pretty early.

Get to the hives I realize I've forgot my smoker. No big deal, I'm suited up. When I pulled the top deep off they blotted out the sun.
Picked up at least 50 stingers thru my jeans, got a couple inside my veil. Never did find the queen.

Three days later I go back to do battle. I've got a hooded sweatshirt under my veil and sweat pants over my jeans. The smoker is looking like the OLD 97

This day they were sweet as could be. I could have worked them buck nekid.

You just never know what kind of mood they'll be in.

Woody, I don't want to see you work them butt neckkid, but I'd sure like to hear the story.
