Title: Dandelions
Post by: Woody Roberts on April 01, 2014, 05:23:59 pm
Woo-hoo! I saw a few dandelions blooming today. A little dead nettle in people's yards but the fields ain't turning purple yet. A few flowering trees were doing their best to get started.

Won't be long now Jack!

My hay fever has been kicking my butt the last few days. As long as I eat honey that was gathered from whatever I'm allergic to at the time I'm ok.

The problem is all of the first nectar is used for raising brood. By the time I can get some this round of pollen will be over. It's a small price to pay.

Same here Woody! dandelions by the scores. You can call your local health food stores and see if they carry local pollen, and it would be good to get it refrigerated, but even not refrigerated it will have plenty of good stuff for your stuffy sneazy head  ;) 8)

About the only thing that bothers me sometimes in the spring is when the Elm trees bud out :o. The dutch elm disease has helped me out here, it has killed most of them. ;D Jack

A few dandelions here, but the fields are purple with dead nettle. Pear trees in full bloom. Cherry trees blooming. Made my first split today with a temp of 80 F.

No dandelions here yet. there is a "faint" red tinge to some trees when looked at from a distance, and green is JUST starting to show in the yard.  couple more weeks will make a huge difference, so long as we don't get a MAJOR snowstorm like we did during one fateful April in the 70's...  I remember it well because it was near my birthday and I got to go snowmobiling one last time... unfortunately it was to ride down the highways and pull people out of cars...

Saw red buds last Friday starting to pop open.
Dandelions are everywhere.
Elms are finished.
Apples are from blooms to still dormant

I also did a split today from an over wintered double deep. Had at least 14 frames of almost solid brood from eggs to hatching.

Do bees go after redbud trees much? I was wondering that the other day. Ours are popping right now. They are native to this area and are all over the place.

It's spring in Atlanta!  Mikel got a call yesterday and retrieved our first swarm.

We gotta make more nucs and our new stands are almost full!  :o

I hope I don't jinx myself when I say I think it is going to be a good bee year!  At least that is what I wish for us all!

love,
ziffa
