Title: Florida trip
Post by: crazy8days on April 02, 2014, 10:10:50 pm
Just got home from visiting my parents in Deland, Florida.  I grew up in Deland but we moved to Indiana in 87' when Dad's work went bust.  They winter on the river where dad fishes for crappie and mom pretty much goes for the ride.  The air was soooo strong of orange blossoms.  I could not get enough of the smell!  Just a 1/4 mile down the river Horace Bell is building a new house.  Cool looking place.  Porch on all 4 sides with a beautiful river front.  Must have done pretty well as a beekeeper!  Wanted to meet him and a possible chat but, it didn't happen.  Hopefully next year!

How many know of Horace Bell?

I don't know him personally, but I know a couple of people who do. He used to have an ad in the Bee Journal once in a while, selling 20000 hives at the time. Must be doing pretty good.

know of him.
if you get a chance, there's a book out there 'following the bloom across america with migratory beekeepers'.  the author, douglas whynott spent some time with the bells and there are some good stories.  a good read.

Nice! I have never had the privilege to smell the aroma of orange blossoms....
