Title: New deep under an established medium
Post by: Jen on April 14, 2014, 06:30:17 pm
If I have a single medium with an established colony/swarm in it (hopefully), can I put a deep under it? or would the bees prefer another medium on top?

Or, can I put the deep on top, and switch them out later on in the summer?

We would like for our hives to start with a deep, then move up with mediums.

You can do it however you wish. The bees will make it work for them.

If it was Mine I would run that deep across the table saw and make it into a medium to put on top of them, but don't know if you have frames for medium.

like scott said jen, do as you wish. at some point i would prefer to have the deep on the bottom, so if you add it to the top of the medium for them to move up into, that's fine, once they do, then you can flip it back to the bottom.

   /agreed

I see nearby beekeepers with all sorts of mixed up stuff on their hives when they are desperate for equipment..
My first introduction to Comb honey supers was that way...   it looked narrower than a shallow so I had to ask.. yep, comb honey super, even shorter than a shallow super..   they had the hive set up with a deep, a shallow, a medium and a comb honey super as their brood chamber..
I cant even imagine trying to work with that set up.

I have a believer in the acronym K.I.S.S. keep it simple stupid. if you like mediums because you fear the weight then use mediums. if you want to use deeps as brood chambers, then mediums honey supers that works too. pick a system and stick with it. as long as you keep to the system everything will be fine....
