Title: Check out this score.
Post by: Yankee11 on April 15, 2014, 10:20:18 pm
Someone called my neighbor and said he had an old deep sitting out last year and some bees had moved into it. Wanted to know it he wanted
to come get it and take it home and try and get the bees out of it. We opened it up and this is what we saw. Ye Haw.

We took the bottom of as we thought there would be comb all stuck to the top. Then we set this deep on top of an empty deep with drawn comb. Closed up all entrances and forced them to exit through the bottom deep front entrance. Hope to catch the queen in the lower deep and add a excluder. Then 3 or 4 weeks later get into the top box.

They were very, very calm. He scored big time.

Nice!! You think the previous owner set that down at one time and the smells were too irresistible for a swarm?

That's awesome!  Although I'm not equipped at this point to take anything like that on, I sure hope I can in the future.  I'm also curious, though, how best to get in the loop of people called for swarms.  In reality, I won't be ready for that for at least a year...  But I'd definitely like to be down the road.  Unfortunately, due to my time and location constraints, joining the bee clubs in the state really won't be advantageous for me...  Unless I want to just pay dues and then never be able to attend a meeting!

Thoughts?

Dues to our club is a whopping $10 per year. Craigs list, ag extension agent, pest control companies, bulletin boards at co-op/farm stores, web sites, word of mouth, sign of the side of your truck, pass out business cards..........

Sure you could take that on, best part it is at your house and you can work on it at your leisure. Just need some empty deep frames and rubber bands. Already got the deep box, just add a bottom and top covers.......new hive!

Cpn,

Here's what I have done to get swarm calls.

I have my name and number with local Police Dept, Fire Dept. I also have my name/number with the local farmers coops and farms supply stores. Any place that might have folks come in looking for something to spray them with.

Our State plant board has a list of people that are swarm catchers.  I am registered with them.

Then there is Craigslist and Face book.

I have gotten calls from all of the above.

Also forgot, pest control companies. They call me when they get a call for swarms or removals.
