Was talking to a guy at work yesterday that found he has bees in the outside walls of his home. I asked him if he would like me to take a look and remove them. His reply was "no" he likes that they found a home and they aren't bothering him.

I think it's kinda cool. It won't be good for his house in the long term, but if he's good with it, good for him. ;)

Why wouldn't it be good. There is a house here in town that has had bees in the wall for over 30 years, off and on.There is no damage to the house. The only damage I have seen on any house is where the bees are killed and then the damage is done by other critters.

R value should be high since they are producing heat themselves.

When we first bout this place it was pretty run down and had not been lived in for a couple years. The two selling points were a pair of mallards flew overhead and there were honey bees living in the attic space. However when we took the old roof off to replace it they absconded. Have not seen another wild bee colony since then. Well except fo the ones I brought home and they absconded...lol Tom

We have an attorneys office here in our town that is located in a sweet little spanish house. the fireplace was blocked off when restored, but the chimney was left intact. There have been bee's in that chimney now for over 40 years. The attorneys won't let anyone near the bees, they love them just the way they are :)

For all those off limit bees I would be scopeing out a place to put a swarm trap or two. Jim

Jim, right across the street from the attorneys office is a two story brick building where the Elks lodge is. There are cracks and holes in that building where many bees live. I know of a bee guru in our area who reaps those bees ;D

I've seen discoloration to sheetrock in the ceilings because of bees. The owner has to repaint the ceiling each year. It turns a dull orange over time. The owner has asked me to remove them but doesn't want to remove any siding or sheetrock. They have been in the ceiling for 10 years he said. Another trap out on my list.

Bama, I've got a lady with bees in the ceiling of a "bonus room" over her garage. When I first started keeping bees 3 years ago she mentioned that she had some bees in her house but she wasn't interested in having them removed. I'm all for feral bees so that was cool with me. Well, last fall she told me they left...??? I wasn't sure what happened to them and didn't go check it out. She told me the other day that she hadn't gone in that room for several weeks and when her son went in there there were several bees flying and probably a couple of hundred dead on the floor and window sills. Also, there is spots of "orange" beginning to come through the sheetrock ceiling...I'm going to look at them and see about removing them. I really don't care to do a removal over my head being as my left shoulder is shot, but she lost her husband a little over a year ago and goes to our church...a nice lady. Her little grandson stays with her a good bit so I'm going to go ahead and take the bees out.
So, bees are cool to have in a dwelling...sure, until they start infringing upon the owners territory. It seems the lawyers wouldn't want them in their office due to liability.

Slightly off topic... But when you guys talk about a trap out, what happens to the queen? Will she follow or do you have to requeen?

I'm going to go look at them and try getting them out for her. Not sure about the lay of the land. My mentor told me to set up a camera, that he wants to see it when 100# of honey comes crashing down on me!!!1 :'(
