Title: My bee palace
Post by: pistolpete on May 02, 2014, 01:05:07 am
These hives are in a community garden, so they have to be somewhat protected from nosey gardeners and idle teenagers.   I like this type of shed setup for a few reasons:  The bees are protected from the extremes of weather summer and winter, inspections happen out of the way of returning foragers, bee flight path management with the lattice keeps them out of human space, most people don't even recognise it as an apiary.  The back cover is only removable with a screw driver.    My hives are similarly housed, but in a standard garden shed with entrances cut to the outside.    The whole thing is made of scraps I picked up from construction site dumpsters.

Very nicely done!  :goodjob:

Are those entrances on the long side of your hive bodies Pete?

No perry, the entrances are in the standard configuration.   In the second picture, what you see is the backs of the hives with screened bottom boards and sticky boards.   My mentor has some hives that he keeps with frames parallel to the entrance for the winter and spring.  He says it helps the bees keep warm.

That is a poor excuse.
Two out of the 4 high schools in our city have had beehives on the roof for many years they only left when the teachers that looked after them retired.

I'm with Perry on this one, the hives look like the are in the shed with the side of the hive against the bee flight wall. it is a great idea as it makes it easier for pulling frames while doing inspections and much easier for grabbing and lifting off full supers. What a great idea for keeping bees in a community garden. Keeps them secure and people from messing with them.
