Looking at the 18 to 21 frame radial extractors.. Borrowed a 9 frame in the past, buying new within the next few weeks depending on holiday or after holiday sales.. Definitely POWERED... Leaning toward Mann Lakes extractor.. but I LIKE the way brushy mtn's extractor looks.... Might be just the picture, but the Mann Lake looks slightly more crude... Maxant looks like a trash can but may be the best option, though probably the most expencive......

Well, I haven't been quiet about my fondness of Mannlake. I can't speak for the quality of their extractor but I sure do like their customer service and free shipping 365 days of the year for over $100 spent! As for the extractor, if it turns and flings that honey out, that's all I care about. :P
-
Yeah, thats a good point.. Taken into consideration!! Thanks Blue!
-
lazy, like dave said, i will echo mann lakes customer service. also, take a look at b and b honey farm, they are my main supplier and are in houston, minnesota......they carry some nice extractors; maxant and some italian made. b and b honey farms......they are beekeepers. can't rave enough about their customer service and also if you call them with a question about anything, they are willing to help and very knowledgeable about any equipment they sell.

Thanks Mrs. River!!! I added it to the list!!!!
Made in ITALY by that guy named Tony!! :) Interesting prospect.. they also listed the Maxant so I didnt repost it.
I've sent some EMails, will see what the responses are!!!

hey lazy, like to plug my local supplier when i can, and besides you are not too far south of me, maybe a scary road trip? i'm adventurous.......
although, i think me and your wife would get along just fine.... ;)
i have a maxant 18, and their italian 9 framer, radial with the motor for about 10 years......never had a problem, runs like a charm.

Terrifying!! I have a hard enough time convincing her to let ME wear the pants every so often!!!!
oh btw, i sent b and b an email warning them about you......
Awww! they will probably raise the price now!!!
"You'd get along great with my wife so long as you dont want to talk about the color of fingernail polish.. go with fishing and youd have a friend for life!! :D

Have you exhausted all possibilities of finding a good used one? I got a Dadant 20 frame with the stainless steel stand for $700.
You have time between now and extracting next year, and may be able to save big $$$, (which could be used for a bottling tank or something else bee related), just don't tell your better half. ;)

That's a pretty good deal Perry. Is that Candadian dollars or US? Our dollar is actually only worth 95 to your 1.00 as of current. Or, do do take payment in maple syrup and hockey tickets?
-
 That was Canadian, Dave. I see "our" dollar up here isn't worth the same as yours again. :( It hurts when buying stuff down there.
I have that Kellys jiggle knife in the back of my mind before extracting next season. They have free shipping at times through the year, but only in the USA. If someone was visiting here though ;) or if anyone lived near the new ferry that will start soon between Portland and Yarmouth.
-
I have actually looked at two used extractors... They apparently used them to mow their yard..and let their WIFE... err.. uhh.. SIX year old drive!!! Still looking!!!
That IS a nice looking extractor!!!! I want it!!! unfortunately.. OUR govt is now printing money to pay debts, so our dollar is going down fast... $1625.00 .. in US dollars is.... 22560.00? heheh

1625.00 US = 1727.21 Can.

Reply from B&B came first!!
Hello,
The Maxant extractors are the best made on the market. Maxant extractors are machine welded, built to last many years with 20 gauge #4 stainless steel. The Maxant extractor has a 1/3 hp GE motor, with variable speed control. Maxant equipment resale value is higher than others. The Maxant extractor can be placed on a stand or be bolted to the floor. I use Maxant equipment in my operation. The extractor, chain uncapper, sump, pump, bottler, have been used over 20 years, even the same belts, only this I have had to replace is the element in the bottler. Made in the USA.
The Deluxe 18 frame also has a variable speed control. With legs it sits up high enough to place a pail under the outlet. For the price it can not be beat. The extractor is 24" tall, 26" in diameter, and sits on three sturdy legs. The food grade Stainless Steel will last you for many years and provide you with the purest product available. Will extract 18 Shallow (5 3/8") and 18 (6 1/4") frames. It will also extract 9 (9 1/8") frames. German made 110 volt motor and controller. We have sold many of the Deluxe 18 frame extractor over they years and have not had a complaint. Made in Italy.
Maxant equipment is made to order, normally they take 3-4 weeks for delivery. The 18 frame are 2-3 weeks for delivery.
Thank You
B&B Honey Farms
Mann Lake just replied about two mins ago;
Hi Scott,
Our 18/9 Motorized Extractor, HH-215, is the right size for 15 to 50 colonies. You can spin 18 medium or shallow frames at one time. If you use deeps for honey supers, 9 can be extracted at once, or if you run a combination of deeps and mediums, you can spin 9 deeps with 9 mediums set between the deep frames.
Barrel, reel, and legs are stainless steel. Lid, hinges, and honey gate are nylon. All of these components are made for us in Italy. Speed controls are from Florida, and motors are UK. We assemble them in Minnesota.
Speed control is variable, and runs motor on standard household current (115v).
I suggest bolting legs to plywood or lumber cross braces for support. You will want to weigh down support to keep extractor from “walking” across the floor.
Price is $1,250, and ships free to US lower 48 address. Deliver is with freight carrier. If a forklift is not available at destination, a truck with liftgate will be sent. If a local tractor/trailer rig can’t access the end of your driveway, alternate delivery will need to be set up. We can discuss that is need be.
We have plenty in stock. Please let me know if you have questions that I didn’t answer here.
No reply from anyone else I sent mails to...
Wife called me today to say someone she works with has a 24 frame extractor with a bad motor.. so I'll be going to have a look at it to see what kind of shape it is in and if I can get a motor for it... I could always back my test stand up to it and hook the 427 up to it
-
A 24 framer with bad motor, HHHMMM could be a steal!!
Could be the motor or if it is electronic variable speed could be a simple burnt part.
Very much worth a road trip if not too far.
I personally would only want a stainless one.
-
I hope to get more info on it tonight, brand etc.. wife just said he had an extractor for 24 frames.. I started asking questions and she got confused pretty quick... she said.. "ALL i know is what he said!! Twenty four frames and he thinks the motor is bad."
SO.. it could be a 60 year old galvanized extractor (Lead seams) someone cobbled a motor on with a fifteen foot belt and seven pullies... :?
-
Maybe horse drawn roundabout, or PTO driven.
-
well.. wife came home.. I asked.. she said its a stainless steel tub.. thats all she knows.. said he wanted a hundred dollars for it so she told him she would take it... I guess I am going to find out if we wasted a hundred bucks or not.... Hopefully its a brand name and I can get parts for it.. if not I'll have to modify it into a honey tank or some such.....
-
Your not hurt for $100 at all.
You can adapt a motor and controller to it pretty easy with the tools and skills you have.
A strong DC motor and speed control can be gotten off of an old tread mill, check around on craigs list for a freebee (or if like in my house in the basement covered in dust and old clothes) :? :?
Better look around and ask if there is any more bee junk laying around.
-
Better look around and ask if there is any more bee junk laying around.
Good Idea!!! have a meeting tomorrow night.. might be able to stop in and have a look.. he said its buried in his garage, going to take him a day or three to dig it out..
-
lazy,
yay, b and b honey farm! good customer service, if you buy from them, you won't regret it, and actually, if you do, i'll call the owner and tell him to be good to ya.......
-
I was just wondering how the story ended up?
-
I picked up one of Mann Lakes 18/9 extractors last summer for my son and used it before I delivered to him. The tub is light enough to carry by one person. It is 26ga. so fairly thin. The other described here at 20 ga. would be much heavier. They do get some flexing and I thought where the tub bolts to the leg cradle should have extra chafe reinforcers at that point. I really like Mann Lake and get most of my supplies from them but if I do get another extractor for myself I think I would like to look at Maxants if you are using it commercially. I would not call Mann Lakes heavy duty.
I have the Mann lake 6/3 hand crank spinner that appears same company and construction as their 18/9. Hand cranking gets old quick but it is a nice little unit.
-
Dont know yet myself!!! LOL!! The factory is shut down this week and the fellow is supposed to be digging it out of his garage during the shut down... I cant ask again.. every time I do I get [THE LOOK ] which means it is becoming a dangerous question.....
-
1625.00 US = 1727.21 Can.
Wow, I should have saved all those Canadian coins I got in change over the years!

LazyBkpr,
I think most of us are familiar with "THE LOOK"...
Not wanting to put you in any unnecessary danger or anything, but wondering if there's an update on the $100 extractor? :)

Red-Green-Yellow Paint, with a clear plexiglass top? Call the bee store and ask if said extractor was made by Lega or made in Italy, or made in China.
9 frame Lega
1. Hand crank snapped off.
2. Inspection cover removed on gearbox to take a look.
3. Shank/crank mount on drive shaft was bastard size of aprox 5/8, which was unable to accept standard low rpm drill (200-400 rpm).
4. Shank turned down on lathe to 1/2" for spade drill & router speed control(30 amp fuse on speed control).
5. On slow rpms the gear on the drive shaft snapped.
6. Upon inspection gear was pressed and crudely spot welded rather than keyed and fit onto drive shaft/spot weld on hard steel without pre-heat to bond metal).
7. Gear had to be pressed back onto shaft & drilled out at the end in 2 spots stepping up drilling size from 1/16" to 1/4" and pins pressed in to bypass lack of keyed stock.
If you don't know a machinist, and aren't handy...Then for your wallets sake don't go red-yellow-green with a plastic-plexiglass top. I couldn't even do 2 chest high stacks of boxes before it broke multiple times. If you only have 1 hive, which it sounds like you don't based on the need for a powered unit; then stay clear of Lega/Italy and/or china.
Another problem with the 9 frame units is that in order to spin deep frames, you have to put baskets in it & then flip frames after spinning so long like the old 4 frame units. Pure headache.
What maxant doesn't advertise about the 10/20...20 frame extractor is that you need to replace a leather washer once in awhile. I'd get 3 or 4 washers extra with the extractor. I've had mine for 5 yrs now, and I'm really rough on machinery. It's held up quite awhile now, and is easy to operate! The best ones out there are the old 1940's - 1970's??? 80's, etc that were made heavy and rugged with american made bearings. I'd buy the maxant if I were you...
Think of it like this: 10 deeps at once, or 20 supers...or 10 d-10 s. The maxant is a welded stainless tank!!! The green-red-yellow tanks with the clear plastic-plexiglass tops are alot of times soldered together. Knowing the quality of internals on the Lega(Italian) extractors, and a welded/non-keyed drive shaft & gear... I can imagine in the long term what the solder lines would do. By the way, the Lega(Italian) units are made of such a thin gauge of stainless that the darn extractor bows in and out like squeezing a plastic cup. Thats a fancy way of cracking solder lines down the road.
Also ask if the green-yellow-red units out there have a plastic basket/reel in them. The 9 frame green-yellow-red units with the clear tops the last I heard/saw had plastic reels/baskets to put the frames in. The maxant 20 frame has a basket/reel made out of cast aluminum. I'll let you be the judge of things when it comes down to it, but don't let the bright colors get your dollar. Maxant makes a darn good quality product! If you want to check one out sometime, then let me know. I'm over in the southwest of wi, about a half hour from dubuque.
To anyone else reading this, I'd suggest getting the green-yellow-red extractor with the clear plastic-plexiglass top only if you have a couple hives and aren't afraid of something breaking.

great addition to this thread keeperofthebees.... I know I don't like or enjoy inserting negative vides into a conversation but sometimes the nakid truth just needs to be said. I have little doubt that as a lot of novice folks get into bee keeping that the mountain of junk these folks may buy will grow exponentially.
-
:goodjob: Great report on the fancy extractor.
If it helps even one person from making a mistake it's worth it. Experience is often the best teacher.

The colors were from the logo on the side of the tank, the rest of it was galvanized, and it has the galvanized top covers. I have started cleaning and sanding the tub. Laquer thinner cuts the sticky gunk, but quickly turns the rubber gloves into wrinkly softness so I go through quite a lot of them.. not to mention having my head stuck in a tub filled with laquer thinner fumes.. thankfully I have a paint mask with new cartridges.
I think cleaning the tub will work out fine, but am unsure HOW I am going to get the basket cleaned. a zillion little holes and every one will have to be perfectly cleaned.. I fear missing a few, and having the camcoat flake at those spots.. Slowly figuring it out, one step at a time. Will post pics of it when its refurbished and ready for action.

Pics would be nice, I wouldn't short change you on an ear full. Household ammonia...You better have a good respirator or go to the army suprlus store and get one of those cheap old east german, soviet, etc gas masks. A chemical & fume respirator for painting?...With the little round can filters at menards-home depot-etc. Ammonia hates beeswax!!! I use ammonia to keep the plexiglass windows on my display hive de-propolized. If you got a buddy with one of those drive in paint booths, powder coating booths, etc with a big giant fan to keep the air clean. I'd take it in there and scrub away with one of those big heavy blue bristled scrub brushes you get at farm and fleet for doing barn sinks. Wet a rag with housebold ammonia, and whipe it on the outside of the galvanized tank, and make sure it doesn't do weird stuff to the zinc. You know how barn cleaners will blue out stainless after awhile, and bleach will eat rubber gaskets up, etc.
If you have an open area with a good fan, paint booth, welding booth, barn, shed, etc Ammonia hates beeswax. Go friendly on your nose and get the scented(lemon) stuff. If for no other reason it cleans off the laundry room floor past the front porch where the little bits of wax don't get hoses off your boots, and always work there way into the laundry room, etc. It never fails to find a little smear of it that gets into the washer as well. You won't make friends on the home front if you don't clean up your messes.
Say to yourself, ammonia hates beeswax.
Pure grain spirits(everclear) hates propolis.
Go to farm and fleet and buy 2 of these:
http://www.farmandfleet.com/products/037835-allied-precision-bucket-heater.html
I use them in my cappings tank to heat up water to mix sugar syrup. 1 will do the job, but 2 are much quicker. You can drop a couple of those in the extractor, or tub to heat it up some for a day or so. The wax and propolis will rise to the top of your tank. If you don't have a farm and fleet, over in dubuqe there is a farm store called Tysons on the main drag going into town where the mall-chillis-etc is at. It's been there for years. Pour hot water by the bucket from your water heater to get the ball rolling(or bath tub faucet in a bucket).
Like I told ya, pics will do a world of justice. Alot of old timers scrubbed the old galvanized units out with some good hot water. A thin coating of beeswax keeps your galvanized steel from rusting, as does the propolis. If you don't know that the extractor never went through a foul brood issue(contaimnated supers), then I'd be safe and clean it out good like I mentioned.
Hot-water-steam pressure washers???
You already got it clean in a half hour of scrubbing, you just don't know it yet!

Scott, you need to cram that motor into a vehicle.
We wanna see video on how much rubber you can burn with the 454cu.
I'll bet fire shoots out of the headers too! 8)

Cool!!! I have this old 56 Dodge Royal needs a big yeller moter if you can't geter hooked up to the seperator.

56 Royal is a sharp looking car. Would look even sharper with a blower poking out of the hood

Not a dodge guy, but the roadrunners, Coronets, super bees etc etc... of that era were NICE looking cars.
-
A little off topic, but I'll join in too. :-[
My best friend growing up had a 69 Road Runner with a 383 magnum (although the hood had HEMI insignias on it LOL). With the posi in it he would hole shot most, but I distinctly remember us going up against a Duster with a 340 Wedge, and after jumping him off the line, all I saw were tailights by the end of the road!!! To this day I don't know what happened.
I have had:
66 GTO
69 GTO
67 Cougar GT
70 Nova SS
68 GMC S/S Pickup
Never owned a Chrysler till now, a 2009 Grand Caravan. :-[
OK, Back to regular programming! ;)
-
Nice list Perry.. Had a 66 GTO too. Wish I still had it.. had a 400 and a 4 speed.. Man I loved that clutch..
wish I had the 55 Bel Air Hard top, or ANY of the dozens of Camaros and trucks I owned from the 60's and 70's
-
Gosh Perry you must be really old to have had all that iron!
-
Since this thread is so far off topic now! Welcome to the forum Gota-B-Easy. Riverbee's thinking don't get the boys talking about their cars and toys we'll never get this thread back on topic.

"Since this thread is so far off topic now! Welcome to the forum Gota-B-Easy. Riverbee's thinking don't get the boys talking about their cars and toys we'll never get this thread back on topic."
apis, LOL! i was thinking reverse psychology. start a thread on motors ,vintage vehicles, toys, etc and post a huge picture of a shiney new 30 frame stainless steel maxant extractor. then the boys might talk about and post pictures of extractors on the wrong thread........ :D :D :D
welcome to the forum gota-b-easy!
-
I'm a bad boy too. :-[
No more going off topic here fellas, if we have to, we can start a thread on "Anything and Everything". If necessary, I (read ask riverbee to) can even move some of the "non-extractor" stuff to a new spot if requested.
Sorry about hijacking your thread Scott.
-
Hey! Its MY thread!!! The only way I can follow it is if it meanders all over the place!! ;D
-
........ :D
i'm not moving anything! it is scott's thread and i think i finally figured out how his brain works and meanders as well....... :D
whatever makes you guys happy! i just found it humorous catching up to this thread EXTRACTORS and seeing pictures of motors and cars, i thought maybe you guys figured out how to extract honey with the motors or the cars, and then read apis' comment.... :D
i had to jump in and say something?! ........carry on!....... :D
ps. really tempted to start a thread as i said (motors, etc... and post a picture of an extractor just for laughs......
-
I just noticed that it was Gota-B-Easy 3rd post and all were here on this thread so I decided to post a welcome to the form. I figured I may as well post it here than wait for him to start one in introductions. I figured LazyBkpr would not mind having his thread hijacked a little further. My comments were not about where the thread had gone.
-
No worries..
On a thread like this, let the cards fall where they may... When things start to get serious as spring progresses I am sure the threads will be more important and need to stay the course... but then thats up to the big wigs who bow to the unknown Chef, not lil ol me. 8)

first car was a 69 coronet 440
