I was asked by the homeowner to remove a colony from his house. The entrance was very busy when I visited. I took some photos and a video. Where do you all think the colony is just by looking at the pics and video? I am thinking a 50% chance they are travelling up the eave of the porch roof and 40% chance they are in the wall between studs and 10% chance they are inside the dead space of the porch roof.

Looking at the cut out I have to do Tuesday.. today.. The bees are entering through a hole in an old board.. I expected them to be nearby... they are going through the hole, then flying inside the barn to the wooden gran bin about three feet from the hole in the outside wall...
So I am not even going to try to guess which direction they are going after they go in...
So Lets see who can do the best Vid of their Cut out Blue!! ;D

Wherever one of these say they are.

Those aren't too badly priced Iddee. I wish I could use the one the fire department uses.
-
I have one from Harbor Freight, 29.95, and it works quite well.
-
I love Harbor Freight. Have two of them within 20 minutes. Questions: So, just point that sucker at the wall? Any common temperature for bees? Or, will the temperature just rise by a certain amount of degrees? Also, is it best to do this in the evening when temps are cooler?
-
The brood area will be 3 or 4 degrees warmer than the other areas. Do it when the sun is not directly on the area. Just point the laser and slowly move it around until you get an area warmer than the other areas. You will be able to pick out the brood nest. It will be simpler than you are thinking it will be.
-
Thanks Iddee! I will have to pick one of these up then. I could see using it for other things also. Shoot, the guys that cook maple syrup could use it I suppose to keep tabs on the temp.
-
Dave, fast forward to about 7:15 pretty good video of the infrared thermometer.

Well, hot dog. That is what I was looking for. The temp raised 5 degrees!
-
George what brand is yours? I see them listed from $19.95 to #39.95 is there a noticeable difference in them? Thank You . Tom

Those are very handy when making soap too!

Got mine from homecheapo, "General" brand and I think it was $40 at the time, only thing I could find locally, but that was a couple of years ago.

Just wondering, how do you think it would work using a medical stethoscope? Would feeling around and listening at the surface of the wall let you hear them buzzing louder as you get closer to the center of activity? In the days when I was a farm mechanic we would sometimes isolate the faults in a motor by placing a large, long screwdriver at different areas of the block and by placing the handle against our ears, could detect where a knock came from.
I have no idea how the cost of a stethoscope compares to that of an infra-red thermometer, but, who knows? :-\

Used to have tech school hires look at me like I was an idiot when I did that Ef..
I have a stethascope, and have attempted to use it.. It WILL get you into a general area, but is not very specific.. could be my ears are not as good as they once were either.

Made a trip to Harbor Freight this evening and picked up some toys. The thermometer was on sale for $35.99 from $59.99. I have been wanting a dado kit for a long time too. It was on sale too, $34.99. I am discovering it is essential for making your own hive equipment. Iddee was right about some of my butt joints moving after winter. I will be transitioning from butt joints with Kregs screws to rabbet joinery. I had been running the pieces over and over again and moving the fence to get my width everything and running the board two ways to get the frame rest which would be terribly inaccurate.
I inspected the house a little more today and I am more and more certain they are in the eaves. The hive was sprayed a year or two ago. Which was obviously a failure. I am breaking it open this Thursday. Scott, I will take ya up on your offer for the best removal vid for a little friendly competition. :P

My Minion and I havd an Appointment at 1 PM today to do the barn cut out.. Cloudy and has been raining the last couple days.. They are going to be grouchy!

blueblood, the laser is a "sighting aide". The closer you can get the thermometer to the surface the more accurate the location and temperature reading will be. As the thermometer is moved further away from the surface it appears that the temperature reading takes in a larger surface area and isn't as accurate relative to the laser dot.
If the brood area is behind the surface it can easily be plotted out.
If you noticed, my thermometer was laying on that short wall in one of the pictures of the cutout I'm contemplating doing. You will enjoy using it...definitely a big help in locating the cluster! ;)

Thanks Ed! I didn't see it in the photo the first time. I was playing with it last night and realized what you are saying about a distance. I think it will be a nice little tool to add to my bee tools. I have a tool box for general yard work and one for swarm, traps and cut-outs.
-
The temps are cooler at 64 degrees F now. I drove by the house and pointed the the thermometer about six inches away under the eaves. I am showing a temp of 59.0 in the eaves until I get within 8-9 iches of the blue siding where the eaves meat the house. I am getting a 60.4 reading there. I noticed there is what appears to be asbestos like shingles beneath the siding. The house in general in the area of the entrance all reads in the low 60's with no noticeable change from one area to the other. I figured the eaves could become warmer closer to the house but the porch eaves do not open up to the main dwelling.
-
My guess is the wall. Check the temp inside the house.
-
Iddee, your guess was right. They are in the wall just above and slightly to the right of the entrance. I could hear them buzzing from the inside bedroom. The young man that lives there was not comfortable at this point with removing the drywall. I told him to think about it and give me a call. He is sure he doesn't want a trap out or the exterior torn off. I made sure he knew the consequences of spraying the bees. Which, he doesn't seemed inclined to do. The temp reading rose on the inside of the house and as you can see on the video below, rose outside considerably. The outside temperature was unseasonably chilly at 48 degrees and misting. The bees were very angry with my messing around their entrance.
So, I went home and made the best of my day by building, priming and applying the first coat of paint on some bottom boards and telescoping lids. This will allow me to expand to 17 full sized colonies if needed. I am currently at 9 Langs and 2 TBH.

WHAT?? You mean, after 68 years, I finally got something right?? Glory hallelujah. ;D
Whatever you do, don't go in from the outside. Remove one piece of asbestos and you will open a can of worms like you have never seen.
-
The young man that lives there was not comfortable at this point with removing the drywall. He is sure he doesn't want a trap out or the exterior torn off.
So he is thinking its better to have the bees in the wall?
-
Good videos and photos. And good luck with that cutout if you are allowed to do it.
-
"Whatever you do, don't go in from the outside. Remove one piece of asbestos and you will open a can of worms like you have never seen."
especially if there's a remnant of a paper bag in there with 'W.R. GRACE" on it.......
-
Sorry to hear the guy is not willing to let you take the bees out. Is he a renter or home owner? That may be the situation. Also if he is a renter you might contact the owner. The could put the young man at ease. Nice looking lids.. Tom

The exterior siding is vinyl siding it clips together It is so easy to remove and re install. Look at the way the top boards are held up either one nail on the top or a couple up under the bottom edge pull them out or punch them thru and once the top board is removed all the nails along the top of the boards will be exposed easy to pull and unclip to get to the next row mark the nail clip edge so putting them back in the proper order is easier.
-
Thanks Keith, I feel comfortable with working with the vinyl siding. It's the possible asbestos shingle siding below it. Tom, the young man is renting from a relative with intentions to buy.
-
The shingles below you need to remove them pry and pull the nails, do not cut them. And ware a mask. Crack a tile and pull it appart and look for the aspestos fibers sticking out of the broken edge. This will give you an idea if they hve aspestos and how much.

asbestos shingle siding is brittle, kind of like soft glass.
