Title: First honey of the season
Post by: rcannon on May 18, 2014, 09:25:22 pm
I pulled two deeps off a hive today and wound up with ten gallons of honey. They had a third deep full, but only about half of it was capped. It should be ready in a week or two.
That stuff was so think, I had to run the extractor about 30 minutes per load. It almost overflowed my filter basket a couple of times. I've never seen it that thick. It's real light colored this year too.
It apparently tastes good, the wife helped a little and licked everything that had honey on it. I was wondering if I was going to have to clean the extractor, but she quit before she got that far.  :)

I've got a 8-frame mediuim full of honey.  I put another one on top of that.  I'm really optimistic this year.

Uncapping only takes seconds with a heat gun.  I'm anxious for the honey, but I'm going to wait because I only want to extract once.

But I've got to spray around the shed to get rid of ants before I bring honey into the extracting area.

I didn't even think to take any pictures. I've got plenty more to extract in the next few weeks, I promise to get pictures. If I don't forget. Sometimes I'm so forgetful, I think I can hide my own Easter eggs.

What insecticide do you spray that won't hurt bees nearby? What kind of ants?

Pesticides? None! For me... any insecticide damages the world and supports Monsanto...  no I'm not an environmentalist  ;)

Ants? an equal mixture of borax and powdered sugar will kill the nest. Now... I haven't tried this yet to see if the bees will take the psugar, I highly doubt it tho now that it's nectar time.

I've also had real good luck with these ant traps, there are many other kinds as well.

Well, there's little black ants and big black ants.  I'll spray around the outside of the building around sundown when the bees are home.  That way it dries, and the bees won't go around it the next day because it smells bad.  It's in the woods anyway, so there's not that many bees on the ground there in the pine needles anyway.  I don't remember the brand of spray.  It's concentrated and I mix it in a sprayer.  I think the timing is the most important aspect of spraying.  Do it when the bees are in the hive.

On a side note, we have fire ants here, too.  I pour Amdro on those hills and it works very well.

Man, I have these people hooked! I took 100 lbs of honey to work this morning and sold every bit of it. I had one woman get mad at me because I didn't have any more.
No I know how a drug dealer feels. I'm gonna start handing out little samples for free. Then I'll sell them some when they come back. Next ill have little kids selling for me at school.

I can't wait Randy~ I'm liking our honey and honey lotion exchange. Just ask Lazybkpr, we exchanged a inner cover for my lotion. He rubs his wifes feet with it! Wow! Lucky lucky Wife!  ;) 8)
