Moved 2 hives both Russian Hybrids. One was very gentle, made substantial beards on front and sides of 2 story deep brood chambers. Other set up the same. Nasty was stung about 40 times. But move complete, arthritis shouldn't be a issue for awhile.:-[

Congrats and bummer dude! I would be so swollen I couldn't move.
-
Whoooo....did you have a suit and veil on? Through the suit?
-
Oh man.... getting stung that many times is NOT fun.. them weightlifters dont know what they are talking about when they say "feel the burn!"
-
Good to hear you got moved and now to settle in.
Hopefully you will have good forage for the bees at your new location.
-
Blueblood, yes stung through suit, where was pulled tight had bees in my veil, and stung about 12 times in back of neck. Guess safe to say I am not allergic to stings lol.

Oh my :o! Barry, we need to get you an Ultra Breeze. I bet you won't have any aches or pains this year.....ha!
-
Be prepared for a possible flu type reaction, it's actually a good thing, showing that your body is purging the venom, which in turn builds your immunity to the venom. You won't swell or itch anymore this season. Wishing you well Barry

40 times! I think the most for me at a time is 4. That was enough!
-
Beings I'm a bee venom therapist I have stung myself in 6 different locations at a time. Knees, hips, lower back. It's a lot of adrenaline for sure ~

Barry what was your final setup when moving the hives as you asked advice on 2 other threads you started. What was the down fall in the plan? what would you do or change the next time. I move hive at least 4 times a year and have a system that works for me. That being said it makes a huge difference on how close you get to the hive I bear hug the hive so the hive needs to be strapped so nothing twists. creating bee escapes and the bees need to be secured in the hive so they cant come out and walk up me when carrying them. And a little smoke to get them going in the opposite direction when removing the entrance screen it they are hanging on the other side ready to boil out.
-
Hey Apis, used mosquito netting to enclose both hives. No entrance block. Was told once the move started bees would cluster with minimal smoking. Initially used no smoke just closed the netting up. Well the bees heavily bearded prior to closing the net. No issues closing the net but hundreds of bees were outside the hives. Side note as I was ratchet strapping the hives, the one that was so nasty, well while prepping the hive, disturbed a large colony of carpenter ants. They proceeded to crawl all over the hive, including going into the hive with the predictable results...sorta thought life might be interesting thereafter...
Hive was " roaring " for the whole trip.

heheh...
on the last episode I had.. I took the 30/40 +? stings at around 5 PM... was actually fine other than the associated burning from having that many stingers pulsing away across the surface of my head hands etc... until around 3 AM.., I woke sweating, feeling sick, cold chills, then felt very hot etc... Finally threw up about a half hour later... I was thinking at the time that what was happening was not a good thing, but I never swelled much or had difficulty breathing, just the nausea and the ONE episode of vomiting... after expelling things I had eaten that day, as well as left overs from the prior week... I suddenly felt perfectly fine. It was quite a relief... so I went back to bed... Felt just ducky when the Alarm went off... I have to admit.. I had caffeinated coffee that morning, and the next morning, and the morning after that.......

Like I said, it's perfectly okay to have your coffee Barry, just get a good amount of water in your system for a couple of days after that many stings.

Mkay.... believe it or not, in bee venom therapy, this kind of reaction is a positive thing, your body took a big jump towards reacting to the venom. Generally, it only happens once. You may find that you won't get woozy this time. But Let Me Remind You that this kind of reaction will not guarantee the absence of an anaphylactic reaction which can put you in grave danger.
Barry, this reaction is not a perfect situation with anyone and bees. Seems that you are telling me that you have exposed yourself to the bees without taking appropriate care of yourself in the past. If you prefer to take care of your bees the way you have been, Please get an epipen and keep it near you at all times. Maybe even two epipens, on in your work box or truck, and one in a secure pocket. When you gather tools to work your bees, one of those tools should be an epipen.
-
I have always strapped the hives during the day when the bees are a lot calmer than at night when any disturbance can get them coming out mad. Then just need to put the screen in the entrance and load and go.
-
Apis, I did all preliminary work by mid afternoon only thing left to do was bring up the netting. Suspect that the defensive colony still wound up from the carpenter ant invasion. Never heard a colony roaring like that. As stated suspected life was going to be interesting lol. Didn't quite expect what I got.
Jen, I have never had a strong reaction to being stung, so never ever thought about counter measures. Today...extremely itchy, mild swelling still apparent. No breathing issues, no neurological issues.
