Nice Barry!  And, those are deep honey supers, yes!  Ton-o-Honey there sir!  It appears the metal on the cover is blue.  I like it!  Also, is the tarp to hide the hives from inquiring eyes or a flight pattern block of some sort?

Lol Blueblood, the backing is side of car port/ storage area. That blue is the plastic protective film I never removed. Jen, no requeening done, all is mellowing out a bit.

I just had my first privilege of lifting off a deep full of honey yesterday. WOW!! I think I pulled something. Not sure what, but man if there was anything that made me want to convert to all mediums, it was that!

I've heard old timers say, "There are two kinds of beekeepers.  Those that have bad backs and those that will." ;D

My 87 yr. old mentor (died a year ago) would take a 5 frame nuc with him when he had a deep to rob, but that's still 40 lbs. ??? Jack

Jen, I have had substantial back pain ( 2 ruptured disc  80 % desiccated )for over a decade. I will be in pain to one degree or another no matter what I do, so I choose to do what I want. Being reserved will change nothing.

Barry Barry Barry... heavy siiigh, what's a healer to do with you  :-\  I sure don't want to see a fellow beek in a wheelchair simply over the weight of his hives. Unless of course you enjoy misery...

Have you tried bee venom therapy directly to your back?  :)

the problem I have with any kind of therapy, my issues are mechanical, not soft tissue. there's very little material between the vertebrae that keeps them from grinding on themselves.

I just had my first privilege of lifting off a deep full of honey yesterday. WOW!! I think I pulled something. Not sure what, but man if there was anything that made me want to convert to all mediums, it was that!

For our spring public presentation I made a deep super simulator so that people would know what they were getting into.  Here is an excerpt from my blog:

A super full of frames full of honey is heavy.  A 10-frame deep weighs 70 - 80 pounds.  Plus you have to pry it off the lower box and then lift it in an awkward position.

My idea was to build a 10-frame deep, but instead of honey-filled frames, I'd put concrete blocks, so that an accurate training aid would be presented.

I had an extra box, so me and dad cut up a 2x4 and attached the pieces to the bottom of the box.  I wanted it to be sturdy enough to hold the weight and not tear the box up.

Installing the 2 x 4s

Cutting the top and bottom

(https://worldwidebeekeeping.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F2.bp.blogspot.com%2F--DHJ8XT8POA%2FUza78BUVeKI%2FAAAAAAAAAPk%2FXmCq97XIPfc%2Fs1600%2F2014-01-16_14-19-09_310.jpg&hash=6ee71b76aaace4783a37b4c3142c6202364f2a29)

Adding the blocks

(https://worldwidebeekeeping.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F3.bp.blogspot.com%2F-sMWpL9JVMbE%2FUza8IUb3JtI%2FAAAAAAAAAP8%2F_RwF4HNKLNs%2Fs1600%2F2014-01-16_14-26-03_82.jpg&hash=69ff6837a28249297ab2f1767eaafacdbd618178)

Cutting the shims to stabilize the blocks

(https://worldwidebeekeeping.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F3.bp.blogspot.com%2F-RnOLUhj_at4%2FUza8Nf2BYBI%2FAAAAAAAAAQM%2FWff8vBDi-hA%2Fs1600%2F2014-01-16_14-41-23_610.jpg&hash=c94506051283525744b2bf215a33562dbdd878ad)

The box ended up weighing 72 pounds.  I encouraged people to try to pick it up.  My thought was that it was better for someone to know what it was like before they bought a bunch of equipment.  I'd hate for someone to invest a lot of money just to find out that they couldn't lift the boxes when they were full of honey.

I did take that into consideration, and you certainly should have had some pain relief from that stinging episode for a few days.

Yes, I do understand the mechanic of vertibrae's and joints. Bee Venom Therapy does not correct structural damage, it simply eases pain.

With regards to super size and the weight that applies, thats a matter of personal preference, and physical capacity. Either you can or would prefer not to. Either way this my personal preference, I am physically able to deal with it, and want that ability to continue, once you stop working with the heavier stuff, isn't soon till you can't. That's my hard headed conclusions lol

Thats pretty much how I looked at it too Barry, so I am not one to talk by any stretch..   My Doc told me in a fairly explicit manner how wrong I was the last time I went down lifting and turning. By the end of that lecture It was obviously clear that if I didnt start taking precautions the "next" time I went down I may be in a wheel chair permanantly..     No, it didn't stop me, but it sure is on my mind every time I lift something stupid.

For the record.. I have a deep full of honey I weighed with a friends catfish scale this morning..   103 lbs with bees still in the frames...   I lifted it with TedH the other day, I wont be lifting it again, I'll call in younger help.

I use the Nuc box trick as well.   when the time comes to move deep supers I empty 5 frames in to a Nuc box (brushing the bees as I go and covering with a towel).   Then I carry the frames to the truck or house and put them in another deep box.    Putting in an escape board under 3 deep supers is quite a work out though and I get help for that when I can.

If I had to do everything all over again, I'd probably go to all mediums.   The only down side is that everyone around these parts runs deeps and it's hard to sell bees in mediums.

Would it be cost effective to sell deeps, but keep mediums for yourself?

I use bee escapes to vacate bees from honey super, never takes more than a day unless queen snuck up and laid a frame or two of eggs, which they will never abandon.

Jen: I'm a firm believer in having completely interchangeable equipment.  There are numerous situations when being able to put any frame anywhere is a substantial benefit.   Maybe if I had 20 hives and I ran half of tehm with mediums, that would work, but I only have 3.

You can stay with the deep frames and go to a 8 frame super and achieve the same thing.
10 frame honey full deep 95 lb.
10 frame honey full medium 65 lb.
8 frame honey full deep 65 lb.
8 frame honey full medium just under 50 lb.

Pete- I like that idea as well and would be doing just that, but hubby has taken an interest in the bees this year and likes the idea of one deep on the bottom and all mediums from there on up. I don't see a lifting problem with that decision because the deep will always remain stationary, I won't have to ever lift it. It's a decent compromise  ;) 8)

jen, even if you had to move or lift them (deeps), pete's suggestion on using a nuc box or empty deep to move frames works well.

deeps on the bottom when they contain more brood and pollen than honey are lighter than a medium so they are not to heavy for lifting to clean the bottom boards

Post by: Jen on June 24, 2014, 01:36:09 am
Thanks for that Apis  :) Believe it or not I had concidered that when hubby wanted deeps for the base. Do you know approx how much a deep of brood would weigh?
Title: Re: Looking good
Post by: apisbees on June 24, 2014, 02:29:59 am
Empty deep with drawn frames 25 - 30 lbs.
2 to 3 frames of honey stores 15  - 20 lbs
7 to 8 frames of brood  15 lbs.
10 frames of bees WEIGHTLESS if the all flap their wings at the same time. (5 Lbs)

I would guess 50 to 65 lbs.
In the spring before they start foraging when the bottom boards need cleaning and with a smaller bee and brood population only around 40 lbs.

Apis- "10 frames of bees WEIGHTLESS if the all flap their wings at the same time. (5 Lbs)   :D

That seems do-able for me beings I'm only going to have 2-3max hives.

After four major back surgeries i don't lift any full boxes of any size i will move half the frames and then the box even do inspections this way. Its either this way or stop keeping bees for me . I use one deep and then mediums after that.  I will use my tractor to move hives when needed .Everyone has their own way of working the bees none of them wrong just personal choice.
