Title: Black Larvae after freezing
Post by: Jen on June 25, 2014, 03:08:43 pm
Cleaning out the big freezer I came across these frames that I froze in late spring. This wooden frame/found I want to put into one of my smaller hives. Don't know what's up with the black larvae/pupae? is it safe to put into the hive and let the bees clean it out? or maybe cut that part of the comb out?

I'm just guessing, but I'd imagine they'd clean it out.  If it were me, though, I'd cut it out.  Or leave it and see if Zombie Bees are born.

heheh, the bees will remove the mummified remains and return the cells to their pristine glory

Okay  ;D  But what made the larvae turn black? from the freezer maybe?

It was in the pupa stage when it froze. I would put them on a strong colony so the bees will clean them out quickly. placing on a week colony the bees may ignore some of the frames and then it will start to grow mold. once it is cleaned then move it to the weaker hives.

That's a good idea!... or just trade them across, icky frame for good pulled wax frame for the smaller. think I'll do that tomorrow :)

I was thinking of suggesting that but didn't want to disturb your chain of thought.

Well Apis... Not to worry, everything disturbs my train of thought. Hubby wonders how I ever come to any conclusion. Hey! maybe that's why beekeeping is so good for me  C:-) there isn't ever a conclusion  :D

You don't know how true that is. I have gone into hives and have noticed that they need some attention in a certain manner, But when I return to do it i see the hive differently and will do something ease with it.
