I hope I hear back and get some advice
-
Hey bullsbees. :welcome:
Welcome to the forum. Somehow you have turned your first post into a poll. ;D and some will only see part of your post.
Don't worry about it.
If you get a chance, post a little about yourself in the welcome section. If I am correct, you are in Indiana, and there are several members here from that state as well.
This is a friendly bunch, and they will be more than willing to answer questions and offer advice.

Hi Bullsbees :) Pull up a chair and bring your good sense of humor, there's plenty of that around here.
If it weren't for this forum, I would be into my fourth season of disasters with the bees. These people really care about you and your bees. You will get answers right away.
Welcome~ :eusa_clap:

;D Welcome!!!
A lot depends on the genetics of the queen you have. Some breeders bring in stock from our part of the country JUST to insure their bees are capable of dealing with the winters up here.
The first hives I ever purchased were packages out of Texas, and those bees DID starve to death within a couple inches of salvation. They had honey all around and above them, but did not move to reach it because of the cold. The following winters I had Carniolans, a few Itallian crosses and several bees taken from swarms and feral cut outs.
I did bring in some Georgia bees to try out this coming winter, and have first hand knowledge that some of these genetics survived our 2013/2014 winter, which was QUITE brutal, often 50 below for extended periods with 40 to 50 mph winds..
Indiana? May not be much different climate than we have here in SE Iowa. You can click the link under my Avatar to go to my website, then go to the wintering section to see what I do.. Better advice will be from someone who lives near you!

Aha.. So I think I know who you are now that the details are coming in, From just north of me.. can only be one of two.. Wheres the other one? Get him in here too! ;D
Now that the details are clearer.. Give those bees from Willbanks a chance. They are pretty good bees. You got them a little late but were having a pretty good year as far as flow goes. Get them some syrup so they can build the comb. Thats the primary objective. Looking forward to hearing how they are doing!

Welcome.

yes our winter was VERY brutal and thanks for the recommendation to this site as well as an awesome hive the info you gave me was equally helpful... I still don't know exactly what I am looking for tho I am 85% sure I saw my queen and I am fairly sure I saw larvae as well but are there people in my area that can show me so I know 100% what I am looking for..

Welcome, Bull. You are in good hands with Scott. Bug him to death with the phone, here on the forum, and in person if not too far away. The first year is always scary and full of doubt. Just relax and enjoy the bees. We will do our best to get you comfortable with them and get them through the winter. I lived in the quad cities from 1972 til 1982, so I know your weather fairly well. I was there for the blizzards of '79. That was a rough one. Lost all my bees that year.

Blizzards of 79.. I was 15.. we rode snowmobiles down the highways to bring stranded people back to town...

Set up a time to come down thats convenient, spend a day or an afternoon. We will go through some hives. Show you what to look for, answer questions etc. A little confidence goes a long way. Besides, I have a horse that needs ridden.. anyone that can ride a bull should be able to stay on this horse right? ;D

Welcome It is good to have a close source of local weather and environmental conditions. and how it is effecting the hives in your general region. Scott is a great knowledgeable source for this.
-
Welcome and enjoy your stay! :)
I used to knock around Cedar Rapids when I drove for CRST back in the 90s.
