Title: Squishfest!
Post by: barry42001 on July 23, 2014, 03:08:30 pm
Took a real quick look inside the hives today just to see how well they drawing out the frames in the deep supers and they are doing a fine job evidently there is a bit at a nectar flow on. As I was taking our cover off I noticed the bees had cornered, in each corner, and under edge of outer cover, must have been 50 to 60 small hive beetles. The bees had them trapped, have never seen any in the brood chambers, and I smashed most of them with my hive tool. So for those of us that were wondering where your hive beatles went, not to fear I found them.

Fortunately, I have no experience with SHB.  But for curiosity's sake---what to you think---could it be that they were in the corners because there was no better place for them to "hide" or could the bees have corraled them there?

Ohh definitely corralled by the bees, the jail guards were right there forming a ring of bees around all collection points.

And ahh efmesch, firstly are you and your family and friends doing well, hope so. Secondly, if you wish, I could probably trap a few hundred small hive beetles and send them to you just so you can say you know about them ( please don't mention me as having sent them over to you. (Don't want too many orders for them! )

All's well --I just wrote a long epithet in Riverbee's thread looking and praying for me

Your generosity knows no bounds.  :D
Who pays the postage
We can put you down in history alongside the generous donors of Varroa to the beekeepers of the world.  ;D

Gee Barry, that would put you in company with Jack the Ripper, Typhoid Mary, Genghis Khan and Adolf Hitler.   ;D

Before hitting post, I meant to say Welcome back efmesch! Comforting to hear from you.
Also Barry, I have notice an increase in the dreaded SHB this year myself.  I have beetle blasters in all hives.  I was considering making FatMan Bees beetle baits with boric acid and crisco.  I fear the Crisco will melt in this heat.
