So, I bought this :

A fancy thermometer? Or do we have 76 minutes left before the bomb goes off? ;D
For checking the temp in the cluster? Or making Candy board?
-
An incubator?
-
Whatever it's for, he apparently saved 76.8 cents? ;D
-
and a few of these

really fancy wax melter. ;D
-
Def...Def...Definitly a Queen Cell Incubator. ;D
-
A warming cabinet/closet I bet. One that you can set a half dozen supers in to keep warm before extracting, and then place buckets of granulated honey in to re-liquify.
Be sure to write down your plans as this is something I need as well.
-
hmm.. a FEW of these he said... so I am thinking the incubator is out, unless its a BIG incubator.. Gonna have to go with Perry's guess so far.
-
I'm with Perry a honey warming cabinet. I have been preaching about how much easier it is to extract if the honey is warm. a state is an improvement over just a bulb in that if the temp gets to high the comb can collapse. A thermostat will prevent this. But as a rule of thumb a 60 watt 24 hours before extracting will warm a stack of supers and not have them get to warm and collapse. But remember the longer they are exposed to the heat of the 60 watt the more heat will build up in the frames of honey.
Where did you find the unit and what did it cost? can it handle the wattage you need or do you need to us it to control a relay or magnetic switch? Need some Magnetic switches I could send you a few. Rated at 10 amp.
Do tell and reveal your plan.
-
Papa, I hope you are busy building, so you can show us both step by step, and final project results, and not just deliberately keeping us in suspense... :-\ :'(
-
It was all a ruse...
The temp control is for the fuel line of his plane and the the light bulbs are for his bathroom vanity.
-
Not a ruse. Just got busy Actually using the thing I built.
I promise, next week I'll get back to this thread.
Right now, however, I'm off to climb Mount Washington.
-
Right now, however, I'm off to climb Mount Washington.
Enjoy the hike!!! Which route you taking?
-
Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail and then Crowford Path to the Summit.
Weather looks perfect. But, of course that can change in an instant.
-
So that's about a 4.5-ish mile hike? How long do you plan on it taking each way? (Sorry for taking this thread off-topic)
-
Used to be able to see Mt. Washington on clear days from our house. Too far away to see from Iowa.
-
No problem. We are planned ng 4 up and 3 down. My down will be significantly faster because I'm hoping my son comes up and give me a ride back down the mountain in his car
-
LOL THAT is a good plan!
-
The weekend didn't go exactly as planned. One person in our party(No, not me) had a very tough time of it. We made it up, but by the time we got up there it was too late to start down. Three of our party hitched a ride with my son. Paula and I hopped on the Cog Railway and then hoofed 3/4 of a mile to the truck from the railway station.

Post a picture when you make the trip in Febuary! (I hear the weather is lovely there at that time of year)

great picture pk!

... so ... what the heck is he making? :-\
-
I'm with you Zweefer, what is he making?

MAAAAAYBEEEE--- it has been a month!
But I'm not much of one to talk, my projects always take much longer than I'd like...
-
whoops. I used it and put it away already.
-
OK,
Here are the pictures that I did take while I was putting it together.
It is indeed a honey warmer.
Initially I was looking to use a broken chest freezer, but I had to use an alternate plan.
Start with a queen castle and wire up the controller and a couple of bulbs

add a queen excluder and a couple of deeps or mediums boxes. Add your pail and an outer cover!

Dag-Nabit....Missed it by that much......

.Looks great! Nice to finally know.
.. And now I can sleep tonight.

Caution if water or honey hit the bulbs when they are hot they can explode. If you plan on using it to warm honey supers before extracting you may have to remove the cast divider boards to get the heat to the outside frames. But with the thermostats it should work well for you.
-

Might not be a bad idea to add a little tin diverter over the bulbs to keep that from happening... Like cheap gas BBQ grills use those as "heat diffusers".
-
I just tried this setup for warming supers. The hot spots actually melted some of the comb. Not good. My solution was a decent "in a pinch" solution, but the meltdown got me thinking about building a purpose built box again.
-
I finally got my hands on a small (not functioning) chest freezer a few days ago.
Today I had a chance to wire it up and make it into my honey warmer.
Step one was to cut a slot in the front for my controller.
(https://worldwidebeekeeping.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs18.postimg.cc%2Fy6r2eiovp%2FIMG_20141204_122434246.jpg&hash=9b54ca1ddddae31a744ebd07c52e30bfb05062ae) (http://postimg.cc/image/y6r2eiovp/)
since the controller was a little bit longer than the distance between the inner and outer wall, I decided to use an outlet extender. I think it worked out quite well.
(https://worldwidebeekeeping.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs3.postimg.cc%2F8o5cd9127%2FIMG_20141204_122447428.jpg&hash=6837af1491b86e29517bca6dee6c1e42d14cec0b) (http://postimg.cc/image/8o5cd9127/)

My heat source is just a light bulb. I wired up the light fixture to the controller and wired the controller to a power cord.

The only thing left is to cut a metal grate for the bottom so the buckets or bottles have something to sit on.
-
What was that controller worth? Nice set up. I have been using a regular house thermostat, but it only goes to 30 C.
Are you going to bother with a fan of any sort? Probably not necessary with that size cabinet?
-
Here's a link to the controller.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IOL73OI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IOL73OI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
I thought about a small box fan for circulation. Can't hurt right?
-
Yeah, I agree. My honey cabinet has 30 something pails in it and because it's so big I need the air to move around in there.
-
30 buckets in one cabinet? That is a room not a cabinet.
This freezer can hold one 5 gallon bucket at a time. with room for another smaller bucket. Certainly not high production, but for now it should suit my purposes.
-
If you figure it takes 300 lbs. to fill my bottling tank, and those are purpose 30 lb. honey pails, it doesn't take long to figure out doing buckets 2 or 3 at a time isn't efficient. You'll soon find out! ;D
-
With any luck. The nice part is that this whole system is scalable. If I find a bigger freezer or build a large cabinet I can just move the electronics over.
-
that's pretty neat pk. i have one of those small chest freezers, it functions, but is not in use.
perry, sorry if i missed this somewhere, how big is your cabinet?
-
Try a metal queen excluder for a platform to set the buckets on.
-
A queen excluder would work, but I had some raised expanded steel on hand. I just cut it and bent it into an "L" and set it in there.
I've got a case of crystallized bottled honey in there now as a test. We will see what it looks like in a couple of days.
-

Exactly  It would be nice to find an old commercial double door freezer.

In a perfect world.
My cabinet is 6' wide, 2' deep, and 4' tall. My bottling tank holds 10 30lb pails so a cabinet that holds that would be better. I use the cabinet to keep supers warm before extracting as well, that's why it's so big.
