Title: Hi from down under
Post by: crazyk on August 31, 2014, 12:32:19 am
Hi all you professional and hobby beekeepers.
Love the forum and lots to read.
As you can probably tell from the title I'm from Aus and only beekeep as a hobby.
I'm somewhat guilty of neglecting my hive for a few years but am going to start getting back into it when the weather warms up.

Anyways look forward to exploring the forum.

Welcome to the forum Crazyk.  We hope you'll be active on the forum, but we'll have to get used to the reversal of seasons when it comes to discussing what's going on with the bees.  Either we'll be half a year ahead or half a year behind.

welcome to the forum.  I guess we'll have to keep your mixed up seasons straight.  What do you get?  medium hot, very hot, and a long weekend of winter?

Hey guys.

I'm from Melbourne northern suburbs.
Haha the lovely thing is Melbourne is renowned as the city of 4 seasons in one day!

Where my bees are at it gets very cold wet winters and hot dry summers. Poor buggers get extremes.
I've got it supered in the hope enough bees can keep each other warm.

Welcome to the forum.

I can relate to the wet winters but mine are mild. Traditionally, in the UK, it is the damp rather than the cold that kills the bees in winter. I can't compare to the hot dry summers. August (one of our summer months) has been wetter and cooler than usual. The plants have had sufficient water for nectar but a better temperature would have helped the flow.

Are there many beekeepers in the Melbourne area ? Is winter survival a problem ?

Yeah there are a few. I'm not a member of the apiarist club but I remember as a kid when dad took me there were lots of people.
My bees are kept out of Melbourne up country hence the weather extremes.
