What the heck is a muscadine? ???
-
WOW! that's a lot! we have the golden and black ones on our property and just beginning to pick them.
-
Without googling I'm assuming grapes?
-
We have those Muscadine grapes here too. They envelope large and small trees and eventually kill them. You can't kill those vines.
I was told that after all the grape vines died in France, they grafted their grapes to the Muscadine root stock and were off and running again. Those are sour grapes. ;)
...The horticulturist Thomas Munson used Texas vines to create hundreds of hybrid grapes and conducted significant research in finding root stock immune to the Phylloxera epidemic, which saved the French wine industry from total ruin...
-
You have to eat them when they turn purple and than they are good and sweet, I love them, next time I am around some I am going to dig the root and grow them here.

They are are a type of grape that has a musky smell and taste. They make great jelly, which is what I grow them for. Just like grapes, there the bronze and the burgundy types. I have 9 vines growing on trellises.
They grow wild in the south east.
Yes Jen, I'll send you a jar of Muscadine jelly
-
;D Yippy Yippy Happy Hippy ;D We'll make a trade! homemade honey lotion? bourbon honey vanilla? we'll talk
-
There was an episode on duck dynasty where they picked muscadines. I had to google it after the show to find out what they was. We don't have anything like that around here
-
heres a few pictures of my vines.

So interesting! are the speckles a natural part of the skin? they look delish :)
-
Either me or some forum members need to learn the difference in muscadines and scuppernongs.
I have been picking both for over 60 years, but I may still be in the dark about them.
Maybe I can learn something here.
-
...scuppernongs....
That is too far out there for you to make that up, but makes me wonder ;)

Guess I learned something new today. Scuppernoong seems to be a type of muscadine.
-
Yes Iddee, That's what I understand, they are a variety of Muscadine.
I love mowing right now. I grab a hand full from the vines as I go buy.
The grass around my vines is well manicured right now. :)
Funny, I was calling local nurseries a couple years asking for Muscadines. The lady on the phone said hang on I'll ask. She yelled out to another lady and the other lady response was " we have Scuppernongs " the lady on the phone busted out laughing she thought the lady said "SUPERDONGS"
That was funny. Will always laugh thinking of her when I here that word.

So you put me in the marketing mode again

Now that's funny.
I see another special label for the jar of jelly coming your way.
-
:D Sounds good
-
I will be your first customer for a jar of muscodine jelly
-
With 4 gallons of berries, I should have plenty to go around. I'll keep you updated.
-
will they grow from seed?
-
I'm sure they will. But it might take a while to produce.
I think I bought 3 yr old vines and they produced the following year a little.
But my 3 yr old vines may have been from grafts. You can start vines by grafting. The vines will root if put i dirt.
-
you might research how they germinate. Im curious if they use scarification for germination. Most of these are spread by birds eating them. So there stomach acid would help to break down the seed coat be for um being unloaded on fertile soil. Love how fascinating they are. Any one make Muscadine wine? Could be another thing to do with those berries/grapes. :)

Muscadines have a thicker skin than scuppernongs. I love scuppernongs - they're amber colored and really sweet! They grow wild like crazy or on a trellis. They are prolific growers and will take over a grape arbor! The muscadines I've seen around here are usually purple.
