Title: New from Oregon
Post by: Aenghouse on September 30, 2014, 06:33:10 pm
Good day,

I am new to this site and to beekeeping.  I have three hives and without Marty Cunningham I would have been in trouble. Shane Tomlin, from our area advised me to put new bottoms on my hives and Marty makes, sells and in this case helped me install them.  Shane is extracting some honey for me.

I live in SE Portland and have purchased these hives from a commercial beekeeper.  Two didnt produce enough honey over the last three months for me to take any.  The third filled a super.  I am grateful to have any this first year.

I dont know what I dont know.  and I dont know alot so far.

look forward to learning alot on this site.
Sincerely,

Adrienne M. Enghouse RN

Hi Adrienne  :)  When I came onto this forum in January, I had no idea what bad shape my hive was in. Taking a lot of pics and showing these people, they helped me get my hive into shape, of which by the way, has turned into 4 hives  :)  You are going to learn so much here  8)

Greetings Adrienne, we're ALL glad that you joined us.
As an RN you'll know what questions to ask soon enough.  You'll find plenty of answers here too, not always in agreement with one another.  Beekeeipng is a lot like medicine--not all doctors agree what is the correct diagnosis and answer to give to the patients.  But like doctors, we try our best.  Like patients, you'll have to be the one who makes the final decision.
But for the meantime, the best advice is to read, read and read some more about bees.  As you read and learn more (and there are certainly plenty of books available on the topic) you'll start getting the hand of the big things and the little details can be filled in by observation and by the knowledge and experience we all will be happy to share with you.
Once again. greetings, and enjoy this wonderfull journey of beekeeping.

welcome to this site.   I don't drop by here much any more but without a doubt this is one crowd that will work real hard to NOT give you wrong information.  Can't say that about many other beekeeping sites... actually could make the opposite statement concerning some.

imho... most folks who understand basic biological systems have little trouble understanding the basics of beekeeping.

and the best of luck to you in your new beekeeping adventure...

Welcome aboard Adrienne.  Like the above posters said, "this is a friendly and knowledgeable forum."  Since you are an RN and have a good understanding of biology, you will fit right into beekeeping.  Good luck and fire away with questions.

Welcome from the Show Me State Adrienne, alot of good info from forum members and humor. We have one quick learner that said when he picked his honey supers up off the ground all the frames fell out :o. he was informed that he had layed it up side down 8). He's doing alot better now with the help from the forum members.  Jack

Hi Adrienne! Welcome to the forum.   This is the best place to be for good advice on keeping bees.   I'm a second year keeper and I learn new things from these keepers all the time!

Welcome from about 10 minutes east of you.  Zenger farms on about 102nd and Foster has bee meetings and hands on.  And the Portland Metro Bee club is at the Clackamas community college down in Clackamas.  From your opening post it appears that you are better networked than I am!
