Anyone ever back into a hive when running a skid loader. Not going to fess up to how I know but the ladies don't much appreciate it when it happens and you will know when it happens without looking back :-[

When you can operate one this well, you won't make mistakes like that any more.

HA! I can do that with an excavator but never imagined it with a skid steer...
Never hit a hive with a skid steer.. but I did manage to bump one iwth the brush hog behind the 1942 TE Ferguson..    I can say that little tractor will NOT outrun bees....

I can testify that a cinder block foundation doesn't like being bumped with a back hoe!   :-[

Just imaging what the guy will be able to do when he learns to run a skid loader :D

I flipped a hive head over heels with the front end loader last year trying to set up my pipe stands. I think it shook them up so bad they were not even mad.

That video is a hoot!  Uncommon mastery of a really isolated skill.  WoW!

I have seen the skid steer video before.  It is an amazing feat.  Truly amazing!  We have a local fellow that can digs silted stock ponds with a big skid steer unit.  It is amazing how much work can be done with it.  A skilled operator can do unthought of things with it, but the above video is in a class by itself.

When a boy, I ran over a bumble bee nest with a brush hog mower.  I didn't realize I had done it, so it was the next round that brought them out for a visit.  Like the above poster, an old John Deere will not outrun bumble bees.  I took eight stings before I abandoned the tractor and ran like hades.  I wish I could still run like I did then.

As Lborou points out, the bweaver bees are a bit hot, and if during an inspection, you drop a frame of bees on their hive they will come see you in bunches.  I am sure of this.

I've never been stung by a bumble bee, how does it differ from honey bees?

I will take a honey bee sting any day over a bumble bee.  I dropped a tree on a bumblebee nest cutting wood when I was in high school.  Got it 8 or 9 times before I got away from them.  Bumble bees don't have barbs on there stingers so they can just keep hammering away.  I would say its about like getting hit repeatedly with a ball bat. ;)

Ewwwhehehw! Can they bite?

There is a bumble bee that burrows into wood, especially fence posts.  I'm sure that guy could bite, but the ones that live in the ground just sting.   I would say that their sting is second only to a scorpion, but I have never been stung by a hornet.

We live in a rocky, semi desert and there are many scorpions.  Their sting hurts like holy hades for a few minutes and then it becomes numb to the touch for a few minutes.  Their sting paralyzes their prey.  I don't know about others, but I do not suffer any swelling or residual itching.  It is just a PAINFUL sting.

If you turn over a few rocks at my ranch, you will find a scorpion, and they are thick on the mesquite trees at certain times.

My hot bee colonies don't mind you standing around the hive, and I wouldn't worry about them bothering neighbors in a town.  It's when you inspect that they go ballistic.  I suspect bumping their hive would put their s_ _ t gauge on full.

Lazy, I wouldn't put up with hot bees like that. But some say that they make more honey. Have you ever re-queened to produce a more gentle bee?

I have a hive that's a little bit hot. Man do they work hard! I will take em a little hot if they keep producing like that.

In my experience with hot hives they make more honey.  I just make sure to suit up and keep them out away from public access

I've had times when one or other of my hives was ornery and beating at my veil. I mentioned it and riverbee said to wait a bit that they will probably settle back down ~ they did  :)  guess they were working something out.

From bobcats, to bumblebees, to scorpions, to mean bees.
What happened to the original topic?
Title: Re: oops

The original topic was oops and was about bumping a bee hive with a bobcat.  Fortunately, There aren't many such incidents to report.  I think if this thread had been limited to bumping beehives while backing up a bobcat, that it would have been a one post thread.  Now if the bobcat in reverse is left out of the equation, there are a lot of oops stories.  By necessity this thread has gone to the oops side.  One could surmise that this is about half on subject.  :):):)

Still, I find it entertaining.
