Title: Dead-out drone queen hatching
Post by: jb63 on December 27, 2014, 02:55:34 pm
Cleaning up dead outs is my least favorite thing. If I don't already know the cause I'm looking for clues as to what happened. This one was done in by yellow jackets. It was up at my father in-laws and he saw them under attack and killed a bunch of yellow jackets. It took a while for me to get around to looking through it,but when I did I found a bunch of queen cells and cups and a part hatched queen.I think the cell was chewed from the outside.

Perry, you took the words out of my mouth.....In fact, I'd bet a lot of money you have a large drone cell there jb63.  When a colony is hopelessly queenless, a laying worker will lay eggs and queen cells can be made.  Thing is, unfertilized eggs will always produce a drone, even in a queen cell.  Can be a real big drone.  I suspect you had an unrecognized queen event and missed it.  I lost a colony to a queen event this fall too.   :)

:o  If those pictures aren't of drones, it's the first time I've seen a queen with drone eyes. :D
