I think I will add glucose to my pollen patty mixture.
If it will keep sugar cakes pliable, i wonder if it will keep pollen patties from getting hard. Anyone ever tried it?
-
Nope. But I was on the hunt for glucose for fondant, and then I ran across Ray's recipe from his bee club in which they use their own honey. The fondant came out great :D maybe try both recipes ;D

Feed ultra bee dry inside each hive.
-
Ray,, do they accept it that way?
-
Yes
-
Ray, do you put it on top of newspaper and place it on top of the frames?

yankee i have never added any glucose when i was mixing up my own, and never had a problem.........what recipe/ingredients are you using?
i buy pre made now, and the ingredients don't have glucose in them?
ultra bee..........
i haven't used it dry in the hive or for that matter any dry pollen sub. if i did curtchann, in the hive, i would set it on wax paper for them to consume. couple things on this...........hopefully they don't drag it out as trash, AND, bees will consume pollen subs with high sugar content in them in the hive. not sure how much the dry stuff has? pollen sub patties.... if they don't need it they will drag it out, if they don't like it they will drag it out........
i like to use the patties, they are high in sugar content. in the spring my bees usually take to the pre made patties.......i used to mix my own, but now use the pre mades. it works for me........
ray can chime back in here, or scott, or iddee, about feeding the dry stuff outside the hive.

Im using brewers yeast, soy flour, sugar syrup, little honey, Essential oils-Lemongrass, peppermint and tee tree.
I just thought of the Glucose cause some say their patties get really hard and the bees wont eat them. I have some I used to make fondant and was just wondering it it might keep the patties from getting hard. I'll probably see how they go first.
Last year I just put it out dry and they went crazy, but that's later in the year wen they can fly. I'll still put some dry out as well as the patties. I also have to use patties in the out yards.
-
Why the Essential oils-Lemongrass, peppermint and tee tree?
Without those, it sounds good.

The ones I made last year turned hard enough to use as mortar to repair my 1900's brick building on the town square. If the longevity is related to the Rockwell hardness of the stuff It will last well into the 3000's....
At that time, all i did was mix some 1/1 syrup into the pollen sub until it was putty like.. Slapped it on the hive to try it.. they ate it until it "set" Hardened like a 2 part epoxy and had to be PRIED off the top bars...

I had found this recipe and made up couple quarts during the summer. I just thought I would a a couple spoons to each batch of pollen patties. Gives it a bit of a lemon smell.
Homemade Pro Health or Honeybee Healthy Mix
THIS MIXTURE IS A CONCENTRATE TO BE MIXED WITH THE SUGAR SYRUP!
5 cups water
2 ½ pounds of sugar
1/8 teaspoon lecithin granules (used as an emulsifier)
15 drops spearmint oil
15 drops lemongrass oil
15 drops of Tea Tree oil
Use hot water to mix the sugar and water.
While mixture is hot add the Lecithin Granuales, spearmint oil, Tea Tree oil, and lemon grass oil.
Put ingredients in a blender and mix for 4 minutes.
add 1 teaspoon per quart of syrup
The emulsifier can be bought at any Health Food Store.
It lets the oils and water mix and adds animo acids that bees need to stay healthy.
Makes 2 quarts

I feed magabee dry on top of a piece of wax paper over frames. Go easy on the pollen sub.
-
Ray, "Go easy on the pollen sub"?
Build up to fast? or other reasons?
-
I feed enough pollen just to get the bees started in early march. Once the natural stuff starts comings in stop feeding. If you feed to much your bees will swarm. You can feed your nucs heavy with pollen sub. Watch youtube Ken Davis little creek bee ranch. He has some nice videos on pollen feeding.
-
Just a heads up , Glucose Syrup is Corn Syrup in USA .... thus Corn Sugar is Glucose too.
-
Gonna pull sub when i see them bringing in the real stuff. Just going to get them started brood rearing early this year.
gonna pass on the glucose for now.
-
You can make pollen patties out of raw honey too.
-
I used some honey in the ones I made up last night.
I am hoping my 20lb bag of brewers yeast comes in tomorrow.
