I have a couple of hives in my backyard, first winter. So, I've been checking on them quite regularly and there have been dead bees piled up at the entrance. I checked with another local newbie (also first winter) and he was seeing the same thing, which we both thought was a good sign (there must be some bees alive inside to carry the dead bees out, right?) Today I checked on them, and saw this: bees scattered in the snow, some quite a distance from the hive, also signs of nosema on the ground. The local beekeeping expert that I usually check in with, is busy with his mother's funeral tomorrow.
So, what do you guys think? I'm about a 2 hour drive away from Perry in Nova Scotia, garden zone 6b, if that makes any difference. We have been having some wild swings in temperature, but not much snow until this week. Maybe this has been going on for awhile and I'm just noticing it now because of the snow?

Not to worry, cleansing flights and some of them aren't making it back is all. That's just regular "poop" not dysentry.
-
Whew, thanks Perry, that was quick :)
-
No sense you worrying all night!
I hang around here quite a bit when the weather is bad. ;)
-
All looks normal to me too. If they start to get dysentery, it start at the entrances. When they launch into the air, they'll have a opps!
-
Springtide- Perry and a handful of others are what I call 'first responders' :) I can't count how many times I ran to this forum wringing my hands, and I had an answer usually within an hour. I love it here ;)

I had something like that happen to me last year. We don't have much snow down here, but last year we had snow stay around on the ground for about 5 days. You guys up north don't laugh! Anyway, it was very cold during that time and I saw many bees dead, scattered all over the yard. It was my first winter as a beek and worried me greatly. But, everything turned out fine.

Is that where yellow snow comes from? :eusa_think: :D

Up here in the north country, everyone gets excited about checking their bees on the first warm day of spring. I learned the hard way to wait till late in that day to show up for the event.
Wife said, what happened to the new jacket I made you?
Me, It just got broke in.
The dog was smart enough to run!
-
Perry, the picture of your bee yard a couple of posts ago, that is EXACTLY what it looks like.
Tefer, if my hive looked like that picture you linked to .... UGH, and thanks for the warning about checking the hives later in the day next spring. I would NOT have thought of that.

"Wife said, what happened to the new jacket I made you?

............... :D
-
Springtide, this normally only happens when everybody been waiting for a potty break for 3-4 months.
They let it fly. :D
Oh, and don't park your truck close by either.
-
Remember Springtide, as Perry says, a picture is worth a thousand words. Pics also help the rest of us to continue learning :) 8)

As Perry mentioned, you also need a bunch of hives in one spot to get bee bombed!

Yep, at the very least, wear a HAT!

Even newer newbie here......we just installed two hives and we have had our suits all "pooped" up. We too were in a panic when we came outside and found dead bees all around our yard, stuck to the house, etc. Since there was poop everywhere we got concerned too. I contacted my bee group leader and he said this was normal. It has been cold here and I think their cleansing flights took them too far out from the hive and they succumbed to the cold. We are so thankful for a support network.

Dysentery is not a usual sign of nosema ceranae. It is a sign of nosema apis, however, that strain of nosema has generally been replaced by ceranae.
