Title: Eau Claire Passes bee ordinance 10-0!
Post by: Zweefer on February 17, 2015, 12:45:28 am
Keeping in the city limits was illegal until last Tuesday.   Our local beekeepers association, (more specifically our VP, Drew Kaiser) has been working for two years on getting an ordinance on the books that the city would pass.  He modeled it after the ones set up in  Madison and Minneapolis.

Here are two short articles after the vote.

I am very excited!  This ordinance has already had 5 new people attend our meeting last month... hopefully many more will follow suit!  ;D ;D ;D

neato!

thanks for the links zweefer! who does the inspections? so the fee is 45$, but fees may also include fees for inspections/health department?

also, getting the 80% permission from neighbors, i was asked about this for the preparation of an ordinance for another city.  i said leave it out..... ;D
but it is whatever makes the city happy.

zweef, we were talking about the 80 % approval by neighbors last night in the chat box.

the city administrator and the mayor did decide they didn't want that as a condition because they don't want to be answering phone calls from neighbors or permit applicants......... ;D

Kudos for Eau Claire!

I suspect your City Government is more the exception than the rule on this topic!  One word of "killer bees" and the dimwitts in the City Halls around here would throw you in jail for 6 months.  Its one of those things where fear is going to rule the day for most people in government.  Why take the risk they'll argue.  It is true that killer bees can't survive our winters (we're looking at -18F here tomorrow night...wonderful), but where do us northern beeks buy new bees from every year?  Down south  :'(

I'm going to make a post about bee keeping laws in Michigan in a separate post.
