Dealing with my hot hive, I'm wondering if there is such a thing as a cranky or mean queen? good question for newbees
-
Your mean queen matted with some nasty drones. I have one too. She is in a 3 deep hive. I;m very careful working around this hive. It made me two nucs last year and this hive has already got the best of me two years ago. This hive put me in the hospital and now I’m getting allergically shots because of it. The other day this hive put a couple stings in me because I was trying to help them out by giving them some fondant to help this hive get thru the winter. I have never though of getting rid of her. Its a good hive. Produces a lot of honey and makes a lot of bees. If I had neighbors around me. I probably would of got rid of her.

Well I haven't run across any nasty drones, they are as placid as can be. I was wondering if a queen can get mean which makes the bees mean. Or, do the bees get mean on their own.

A mean dog or a mean hive, they dont survive at my place. If I was getting allergy treatments I would certainly not have a mean hive. They are not worth a lawsuit, and certainly not worth my life.

...... :D
Scott, what is your thoughts on nasty drones?
-
Scott
I been married to my wife for 33 years. Never had a problem. Lets try and keep this forum to beekeeping only.

Neither queen or drones are " nasty ". Genetics and environmental conditions determine defensiveness. I have never heard of a queen stinging a person ( Jen since your the queen of the forum you may have issues though ). Of course drones can't sting or even bite. The " mean ones " are workers within a specific age group.

I love my wife more than life itself.

LOLOL! You two really cracked me up! But at least I didn't spray my honey tea with a nip all over the keyboard

Okay, got my laugh tears dried up.

This is a very nice explaination Barry :) I haven't ever heard of a mean drone either. However, I think Ray see genetics as in possible disposition as well.

What could a mean drone do? Stare at you for a really long time with those big bug eyes?

are we on topic here?
"Dealing with my hot hive, I'm wondering if there is such a thing as a cranky or mean queen? good question for newbees"
yes, we can get hives that are aggressive in nature, its all in the genetics, or for other reasons that are sometimes not always obvious to us.
so we need to find out why a hive is aggressive.
btw if you are allergic, all it takes is one sting, irregardless of whether the hive is aggressive or not. if the few of us who have a true allergy that want to continue to work bees, it is in our best interests to minimize the exposure to stinging incidents. in all honesty, any of us going through allergy treatments are absolutely beyond any common sense at all for keeping bees.
if we have a hot hive? it does not make it pleasant to work allergic or not, the answer is figure out the problem and address it, and let's not let that hive get away from us, and cause our family members, neighbors, our critters etc.... to suffer from stings from an aggressive hive.
figure out what the problem is, and/or requeen.
