Has anyone been out looking for morel mushrooms this year. Been out a few times and haven't found any yet.

We rarely find any here until about mid April, but i'm ready for them anytime. Fried up with baked beans and a cold one makes for an end of a wonderful day. Jack

too early for us rat, we received about 8" of snow a few days ago. we have been hunting for sheds and just general wandering around......... ;D
love morels, some years we get a pretty good harvest, some years not.

We didn't get any here last year do to drought but up bakers way they found them by the buckets. Which is 200 miles from us. We usually see them at the first of April
or when the redbud trees start to bloom. For me its a good excuse to get out take a walk and enjoy the timber

I think it's still a little early. We haven't had much moisture yet and it hasn't warmed up enough yet either.
We need a drool smiley. This will have to do for Jack. :t3816:
For those that are new to finding morels. Gather them in a mesh bag. As you leave the area, swing your bag to distribute more spores. Then tell me where you found them!

One time we were camping at a creek side about 45 minutes from home. Taking a nice forest walk by myself I started spotting the morels. There were just hundreds of them. I had on a zip hoodie and started putting them in my hood and big roomy pockets. Went back to camp dumped them off in a box, kept going back. A gold mine to be sure. Turns out the mushroom hunters were starting their harvest that following Monday. Sure glad I got my pick first :D

Too early for us and I have never had one, Funny thing is last year We had an old guy wandering through my Hosta garden and looking real close at the ground then looking up as if anyone was looking, seen me and wandered back to the bike path(in front of our house).
I wondered what he was looking at and there were 30 to 40 Morels there.
I am thinking he was seriously debating on taking them.

You can seed and create your own morel patch with the right conditions.
You just need to til in wood chips, sawdust or mulch and wood ash in a well shaded, well-watered but well drained area. Once well enriched, seed in a handful of shredded fresh morels. If the conditions are correct, they will fruit within a year or two in the spring and several years after. You can keep enriching the soil in the summer to keep them coming back.
I hunted for morels (where I hunt) last year without success. Once I find them (even just a few), the north side of my house will become a morel garden. A friend of mine had a patch growing for several years after seeding.

I'm trying that with ginseng. So far, no luck. But I'm gonna keep on trying.

Only time I saw any morels around our place was 40 years ago. They were coming up behind the outhouse. I didn't bother...

Found about a dozen little bitty micro mushrooms today! Kinda fun, Josh, myself and two of the grand daughters all found some. It's neat to see the excitement of the first of a lifetime find! Ted
