Title: Short video of us sliding the queen cell frame in cloake board hive.
Post by: Yankee11 on April 03, 2015, 10:49:59 pm
I think we have a good population of bees to start the queens.

We put 2 frames of grafts in with a frame of pollen in between them

Hey, yankee, they've got a new tool on the market these days. It's called a smoker. Google it and learn about it. It is real handy to have around a beehive.

Yea real funny, it just pissed them off worse. We had 2 smokers lit, it was useless.

This is the meanest hive I have ever had. Plus it was rainy/cloudy, they were queenless.

I'm going to side with Yankee on this one Iddee. My hot hive... doesn't matter if I use the smoker or not, they're still pounding my veil.

When we opened to remove the frames to graft into. I had the smoker and no gloves. They made me drop the smoker and stung my hands all the way back to the house to get my gloves.  They made my buddy put on a second pair of pants. Wore his legs out.

We have already pulled 2 nucs from this hive and they just keep getting bigger and bigger.

But I'm bout done getting stung by this hive. Soon as flow is over  :D

A couple weeks ago I got into my hot hive to attempt pulling a nuc. I had to quit 4 times to walk around the house and wait 5-10 mins for them to leave my veil. Then when I was in the hive I had to run my gloved hand down my veil so I could see and finish my inspection, finally finding the queen 3 hours later.

I hear ya on the waiting until after the flow. I mentioned on another thread tonight, that I was real close to giving this hive a sulfur sauna  :D with the amount of stings we are getting in this neighborhood, it may be sooner than that  :-\ Iddee said wait 10 more days when the new queen is emerged, hopefully mated and laying. If the hive doesn't calm down more by then.... I dunno

If I do something with this one, I will probably just split in into 4, 5 or 6 nucs and add new queens to each nuc.

Mkay, I'm off topic, but can I ask when your last flow will be over?

Here at my house with no crops, Probably end of June (depending on weather)

Out yards(soy beans, cotton and sun flowers)  wont end until probably august.

Looks like we left some young larva in the top box. Oh, well, 4 more nucs to make.

Live and learn. I was kinda worried about that with all the brood in this hive.

I tried to watch the video.  Initially, it told me I had to sign in... When I signed in, I was told it's a private video... Are you teasing me?

There was a "Publish" button still on video. I hit it and it went away. Maybe that was it.

Well, we made some mistakes and wasn't quiet the acceptance rate we had hoped for. around 70%.  But we will take 30 to 35 queens.

But we only get better the more we try. This was our first attempt using the cloake board method and I like much better than making up
a separate starter nuc and them moving them to a finishing hive like we have been doing in the past.

Next cloake board we set up will have zero brood in top box when we insert the queen grafts.

I think your doing  very good with your system. If you can get 20 or more matted. Your off to a good start. I'm looking forward starting my adventure with the cloake board in June. I might start out with 10 punched cells. I hope to get at least 5.  all cells will be put in the nicot cell cup holder with cell protector cages.  I bought the Carson cp-60 head magnifier to help me see the right age larva. The only problem I might have. I use plastic. I have to use one frame with wax foundation in the hive I want to cell punch from. At first I wanted to use the nicot all together. What I here about it. I would have to do a lot of fooling around with it to make it work. I done my research, cell punching is for me or do it the fat beeman way. I like Ken Davis at little creek bee ranch too This guy is like me. Everything is suppose to be simple.

That's what I have Carson CP-60, works great, love it.

I saw a box/holder type thing this guy made that holds a whole deep frame. It has a queens excluder on both sides. You put the frame into this box with the queen. She cant get out and can only lay on this frame. After 4 or 5 days you pull this frame, shake off the bees and queen and you have the larva you need.

This might work for you to stick a frame with wax foundation pulled comb in this box/holder. It's a beeks FB page. I'll try and find if you do FB.

That looks interesting. Thanks for putting it up. It looks easy to build.

It would save time looking for the right age larvae I think. I may try and build on as well.

I'm kinda getting into that "saving time" thing now days.  :)

Its simple to build. One plastic excluder and some scrap wood to put the sides together. In the picture it looks like he used a piece of plastic on the bottom and plastic on the two ends to hold it together. With this thing I wouldn’t have to punch out cells. Just cut a strip of wax foundation, wax it to the cell bar and let the bees pick what larva they want. Fat beeman has a box for commercial beekeepers but its to big for what I need it for. He calls it the queen cell timing box. Hes got a nice video up on you tube about it. I watched it 10 times already.

Ya know. I bet if you had wax foundation frame ad put it in that box with queen for 4 or 5 days. You could pull it out a "notch" several different places
on that frame and then put it in a queenlees cloake board starter hive and they would pull a lot of quens. Then you could just cut the quenn cells out.

Have you looked up anything on cell notching?

when done watching these videos you wont need to take a queen rearing class.

I use a timing box which is a 10 frame box with 3 compartments.
Each compartment is separated with a queen excluder put in like a follower board.
The queen has 3 frames in the center.
I pull a frame and see eggs I place that frame in the outside box.
I come back and see larva I know exactly how old this larva is.
This way there is no guess work.
I got the plans from Fat Bee Man
