Thursday evening, 24 "keepable" crappie, 6 white perch, 2 large catfish, one large snapping turtle. Crappie under 8 inches have to be put back.
Friday morning, 40 keepable crappie, 4 white bass.
Freezer looking much better now.
May be going back tomorrow, Sunday. Not sure yet.
-
hrm.... no Crappie.. a few bluegill over 2 lbs, and half a dozen cats over ten lbs in the freezer.. The fishing is JUST starting to get good here.... I miss catching crappie.. I'd like to add them to my pond, but they typically devour the young blue gill...
-
My favourite!
http://highliner.com/#!en/product/33
My wife works for them (from home) as well, quality product. ;)
-
Well, no fishing tomorrow. Boss just called. Had about 6 packages and a few queens left over. Will be installing them in our hives and making a few nucs tomorrow. OH, well, if it's fishing or bees, it should be a great day.
-
Wow, you did better than I did. I just caught a few Pollack at Walmart tonight ;D
Never ate a crappie. How do you cook them?
In terms of taste, how do beeks rank the fresh water fishes?
-
Rank....Crappie and largemouth bass tie for first.
cook....Just roll in different batters or dry mixes and panfry or deepfry.
-
You guys down south should be able to catch 2 lb crappie. There’s one lake I would love to try is Kerr Lake. I here 2 lbs slabs are very common. We have a 9 inch limit. I wont take out any crappie under 12 inches. By the time I clean it whats left to it. I never fish for crappie during spring. Its to easy to fill a bucket. I prefer to fish for crappie during the summer months trolling over 30f of water down 5 to 10 feet. Spring crappie spawn. I'm mostly a great lake troller and fish our deep finger lakes for trout and salmon. I do a lot of lake erie fishing for walleye. I'm way behind my fishing this year. I haven’t pulled my boat out of storage yet. I'm usually fishing our Seneca Lake by mid march with my boat. Seneca is to deep to freeze over. Its over 700f it froze this year in parts. My buddy called yesterday. He wanted to troll lake Ontario. We still have floating ice yet.
-
NC's record crappie was 4lb 15oz. Caught by a friend of mine many years ago. Very few over 2 lb here, as they are so prolific they crowd a pond to where few obtain full growth potential.
-
You guys down south have plenty of reservoirs and ponds. You need some kind of fish to eat the crappie during the spring to help balance them up when they spawn. We have a lake up here with excellent crappie and walleye fishing. Both fish eat each other. When the walleye numbers are down the crappie numbers are up. This lake has tiger muskies in it too to control booth fish. What I like about some of your techniques down south, you can put in your own brush piles and stake beds to draw crappie to them and mark them with a GPS and fish them later. Up north we cant do this. Our fisherman are light years away with their thinking. All they want to do is fill a bucket. If we could put in brush piles here our crappie fishing would be better because the crappie would have a place to hide from the predator fish.
-
sinking a brush pile is a secret activity even in the south, you don't want everybody to know where your secret fishing hole is at. Surely you could sink a brush pile in the middle of the night without mr game warden finding you out!
-
My buddy and I want to sink a few brush piles but he wants to go through the right channels doing it. Mr game warden does not like the idea.
-
I've never sank a cedar tree in the daylight. I've also never asked a game warden for permission to do anything. The last time I was checked by a warden, he measured my fish, and being legal, he handed it back, but dropped it between the boats into the water before he got it over my boat. He can kiss my elbow, or wherever I can't kiss myself.
-
My sentiments exactly on the game warden, only been checked one time and that was in a dove field. He was checking to make sure there were no more than three shells in everybody's shotgun, shucked all three of mine in the mud, handed me back my shotgun and walked off. I had several choice words for him but they fell on deaf ears. Come to find out he was doing everybody that way.
-
"in terms of taste, how do beeks rank the fresh water fishes?"
trout, (all species), salmon, greyling. catfish, walleye, and big fat blue gills......... ;D
grill, or panfry, usually grilled, but can bake in the oven/broiler. i am not one to use batters or mixes, only occasionally.
-
Best eating walleye, Perch, crappie and blue gill and northern pike. I like the smaller walleye 2 lbs or less. The bigger ones I throw back in or give away.
Trout and salmon from the great lakes get pretty big. Again I only take the smaller ones for eating. These fish get smoked or backed in tinfoil over the grill. Those little trout you get in the stream have very little taste to them. They come out of a hatchery.
Catfish are good when the water is cold. Excellent smoked. Bullhead are good too when the water is cold. Once it warms up they get to soft and taste like mud.
-
"Those little trout you get in the stream have very little taste to them. They come out of a hatchery. "
not where i fish ray..........but you are correct, hatchery anything has little to no taste, and you can tell by looking at them when caught...... ;)
-
heh, we had a game warden like that.. many years ago... He was asked to leave.. Then he was FORCED to leave... There is no reason for anyone to be like that, police, game warden etc... respect goes a long way in a small community.. lack of it tends to go the short way.
-
Crappie, bluegill, walleye, muskie, smallmouth, then small largemouth. But I'll take a freezer full of flatheads anytime.
-

I am with Dunkel and Absolutely owe him a beer.. He will preferably get that beer while kicked back on the boat, pole in hand.. ;D
-
Maybe I need to take a break from the bees and get back into fishing this summer :) I used to dream of catching a Muskie, but never had any luck.
I was once ticketed by a game warden too. Not for the fish or a lack of license, but because we didn’t’ have life jackets in the boat. :o We had the floating seats, but evidently that wasn’t sufficient for this guy. It’s not like we were on Lake Michigan. Just a small lake and we were all excellent swimmers; lots of swim lessons as kids. Unfortunately, the school yard bullies tend to be the ones that end up with badges later in life.
-
I'm with Riverbee. As I fly fish more than anything, trout are my top choice. And WI has some great trout rivers... One just happens to run through mrs rivers back yard!
-
I never had any problems with our game wardens in my state. When I see one come up to me I show respect and keep my mouth shut. I let him do anything he wants to do. The sooner I get rid of him the better. The people I cant stand is PETA. These people are to extreme for me. I walk the other way when they start talking. The coast guard is a pain in the butt. I had them come up to me with M-16 rifles asking to board my boat 15 miles out in the lake. They tore my boat apart only thing they could find is flares out of date. Gave me a warning to get new ones or pay a fine next time they see me out with out of date flares. Its foolish not to carry life jackets on any boat. Those things could save your life if you need one. Its better to ware one all the time.
-
Life jackets are not the only flotation devices. He said he had float cushions. They are just as good, if not better, than life jackets. They can be shared and will hold 2 people up without letting one panic stricken drag the other under water and drowning both. Not carrying a life jacket is not foolish. Not carrying a flotation device would be.
Of course, some of us enjoy being foolish.

There’s a big difference between a life jacket and a cushion. A cushion is only good when somebody is in the water. You throw him the cushion with rope tied to it and pull him back to the boat. A life jacket is meant to keep you up on top of the water till you can throw him the cushion and help him out of the water. I ware an inflateable life jacket All the time. The water I fish. I would have to be crazy not to have one on. Again life jackets are meant to safe our life if we should fall in the lake. Any time we go off shore without one you are putting yourself at high risk. Most drowning are caused by people not waring a life coat. The ones that have one on you can help him right away. Police or coast guard. The first thing they will ask you, can I see your life coats. You don’t have any on the boat. The pad comes out and you pay a fine. We have a law in my state now. From November first to late April. Everybody on the boat must ware a life jacket.
-
Life jackets are no longer referred to as "life jackets". The correct term is now "PFD", or Personal Flotation Device. Having a cushion is all well and good... IF you're OK. The primary safety aspect of a PFD is that they will keep you afloat even if you are unconscious or otherwise unable to keep yourself afloat or hold onto something. Examples: A) You tip out of your boat, hit your head on a rock and are rendered unconscious. How are you going to find, swim to (or catch) a cushion thrown to you? B) You fall into the water and break your thumb or fingers on a branch or rock under the water. C) You're in a river an the water is moving too fast for you to be able to control yourself to a cushion, or it washed the cushion away. ... The "What-Ifs" are endless. PFDs are designed to float you onto your back and to keep your mouth and nose above water, whether you can, or not.
Here in MA, it is state law to WEAR a PFD from October through May (I'm pretty sure those are the months, I don't remember the dates, though). The remaining months, you must have one in the boat/watercraft for each person. If you are under 16, you MUST wear one at all times. 16+ is optional, but it must be present AND readily accessible. If you are stopped by the EPA and you're not wearing a PFD, you will have to show that it's within arm's reach (I keep mine sticking up behind my seat in the kayak. If you pull out a cushion or pad and don't have a PFD with/on you... They fine you and can confiscate your boat and everything you have with you.
Sounds not all that different to what Perry said for his neck of the woods...

Being an ex Mo. State Water Patrolman the first thing i ask to see was a Coast Guard approved life jacket for everyone on board, it's the law in Mo. If not they got a ticket. I spent to many hours dragging for drowning victims with family members camped out on the bank waiting for there love one to be found. If they'er not washed under or caught on something they will come up within 72 hrs. and it's not a pretty site. Then you have to radio that you have recovered the body and wait for the Coroner and Ambulance to arrive before taking the body to shore with family members waiting to see there loved one. If that doesn't jerk your heart string nothing will. In the 5 years i was on the patrol i gave mostly warning tickets, I won't go into the unbievable things i've seen people do, but there are people who need protected against there selves. :o Jack

Living downstream of Oak Ridge National Labs and the powerhouse where I work, I wouldn't eat anything out of the Tennessee River. Too much PCBs, mercury, and other nasty stuff.
Bob Seger wrote a song about my swimming - Like A Rock. I never go out on the water without an A-1 top-notch live jacket. Listening to the scanner like we do, there's always people being pulled out and dredged up during the summer. The "It can't happen to me" thing is fatal way too often.
-
OK, let's get back to fishing...........................................
-
You guys are making me jealous, the ice just finally cleared out of most places…
;D
Trout season did kick off, though I didn't go. Have a few streams nearby, never seem to find the time.

-
Crappie, Blue Gill, Walleye, and Catfish, are what i go after and eating in that order. The White bass and Walleye are running up the Big Sac river now and the Crappie will be soon. Got my boat out today and checked everything over so it's ready to go and so am i if the wind ever settles down, don't like fishing in high wind out of a boat, takes all the fun out of it.Jack

our river, (rush river) is pretty low this year, with the lack of moisture/snowfall. fishing is going to be tough. brownies no hatchery trout. we also have a little spring creek the flows into the rush which harbors brookies. we have caught some nice brownies on the rush, 3 and 4 pounds but the average probably runs about 15-18 inches. from last year, this is really how i like to fish:
paradise valley livingston, montana, just below big jim canyon and yellowstone nat'l park, getting read to put in about 7:00 a.m on the yellowstone river:

Hi Ray! I have a friend who's land follows Sandy Creek... I should call Chris! ;D ;D
I have not been that way down the Parkway (my exit is a few prior), but the Genese is open, see boats all the time now when I cross over that one, and there's a TON of fisherman from the shore. I pass over Salmon Creek's outlet on my way commute, and it's loaded every sunny day. The DEC's been stocking, so I would guess they are open, but call first (there's likely other launches you can access if closed). That reminds me... I should renew my license pretty soon. Let me know if you come up this way, would love to meet!

Those are excellent pictures Mrs. River!!!
Will have to see if I can find some of mine, or take more this year...
I fished the streams and rivers of Maine for 17 years for brookies. It wasnt fishing as I grew up fishing... The saving grace was going to the jetties and fishing for striped bass.. Thats where I could pull in fish weighing 20 lbs..
The first time I ever fished in Maine, my brother in law took me, and he caught a brookie, and promptly gutted it.. I was SO HORRIFIED that someone was going to eat a bait fish...... I got over the feeling fast the first time I ate one of those little things.. we caught a few browns, and there were lakes with walleye, pike, bass, etc... nThe downfall was, they didnt have cats.. My wife asked what "cats" were, and I explained it.. she said.. "OH! You mean Hornpout!" So she took me hornpoutin... you fish for em at night, build up a big fire... Turns out she meant little white belly bullheads.. our bullheads here are yellow bellied.. so that didnt satisfy my cravings either....
There is just something about pulling in a 40 lb flathead that cant be compared to any other kind of fishing I have ever done.. ten lb channels, 60 lb blues... wait, maybe its sitting there all relaxed while waiting for a bite... with a beer in hand.. maybe thats what it is! No casting the line all about repeatedly, or stomping through the underbrush, or trying to sneak up on a tiny pool of water to see if theres a brookie in it...
Every kind of fishing has its sense of enjoyment and satisfaction, and I would take any one of them over a day of work... But give me a day of fishing for big cats, and at the end of the day, a deep fryer to cook them in!
-
Any kind of fishing Scott ;D, Toward the end of May through the 2nd week of July the Flathead (also called yellow cat, here) are on nest in the Big Sac river (noddle time). It has been against the law in Mo. for all but one year in Mo.? The thrill of getting a 40lb to 80lb flathead out of it's den and not getting caught is a game played by many in the area. Come on down buddy. ;D Jack
-
I watched an Uncle of mine tie up with a 68 lb flathead.. My Uncle was about 5'4" tall and weighed 135 lbs.. It was quite a fight.. cousins came RUNNING when he got to the surface and yelled for help...
I have multiple scars on my arms from some big ones, but I learned through the years, If I planned to do something illegal, I needed to plan to get caught as well, thats just how my luck works.

My sister's grandson, this weekend.

I hope to have some good pics to add this year...

Hey, a couple of years ago i bought 100 Coppernose perch and put them in a pond, do any of you know anything about them? Like how big they get, are they good eating? I may not have to worry about them, the pond i put them in got real low last year (probably to 4ft. to 5ft. deep) and the weather was hot. The pond is full and running over now so i'll see if i can catch some? i also put Redear perch in the same pond. Jack
-
Had a buddy and his friend from Texas come up for a visit. They were all excited to go ice fishing. They came back with 40 lbs. of ice.
-
LOL Wish I had pictures of those fillets!
