Title: Hello from SW Washington State
Post by: JanO on December 29, 2013, 01:43:20 pm
I just joined and want to say hello to all of you.  I'm in SW WA, sort of between Portland and Seattle.  I'm getting ready to start my first year of beekeeping in the Spring with just one hive at the moment.  I'm excited to begin this journey, and look forward to learning from all of you experienced folks in the Pac. NW.

Welcome! This will be an interesting time between now and getting the bees. Remember, every question you ask will produce answers for other viewers who were wondering the same thing but too shy to ask. Don't be shy!

Welcome to the forum Jan and be sure to ask any and all questions.

Good luck with the bees this coming spring. Are you buying a package, nuc, or established colony?

Welcome to forum Jan0. You couldn't find a more knowledgeable group of people. I would suggest starting with 2 hives. It will give you a lot of more options when working with the bees than one hive

Thank you for the warm welcome.  I am actually planning for 3-5 hives by the end of the 2014 season, but only have one ready to go at the moment thanks to my hubby giving me exactly what I wanted for Christmas.  At some point I hope to expand significantly to 15 or more, but that won't be for a while.  You know what they say about "baby steps."

I have a package of Italians ordered for the first hive.  However, for the last 8 years or so we've had a minimum of 2 swarms come through and land in the same tree every year.  Usually we just let them be and they take off in a day or two, but since we're now starting our own hives we hope to collect them for ourselves.  With the help of my bee club, and a mentor who will assist me when the time comes, I feel pretty confident that we'll get at least one of them in a trap this year.

Excellent.
One on order and high possibilities for a swarm catch (or two).
You have found a friendly group here, with plenty of knowledge and good humour to share.
Ask questions when you need to and contribute answers when you can.

Welcome JanO.You may want to set a swarm trap in that tree.It sounds like a good place to fish for bees.
