I was on Hive Track and was looking where all members were located on their global map. It's pretty cool to see where people are located. Is this a possibility on here?
-
I second that. It would be great to be able to see at a glance where folks are. Map markers could, maybe, provide forum handles.
-
I'll add it to the list of of potential "upgrades".....

Here you go -> http://www.worldwidebeekeeping.com/forum/index.php?action=googlemap
Now members must add their pin in their profile

Thanks for implementing the Member Map. It certainly helps but our locales in perspective.
I have to wonder, though, why such a small fraction of members have provided their coordinates.
-
Probably wanted by the law. ;) :D

I think most members don't realize it exists. I happened on it by accident and, when I discovered it, pushed in my pin.
Maybe we can encourage more pin pushing by making a special note on the home page encouraging members to place themselves on the map.

Awesome! Now I know where I am!
-
LOL!!
Mine is added. Pretty cool, switch to sat view can zoom right in.. Now to see who was out sunbathing in a bikini!!!!
NO perry!! Just..... no!

 ;D

Thanks for the bit of prodding! I went back to my profile and looked up what I had to do to stick my push pin in the map. It shows up a bit off target but almost within shouting distance.
-
Same here, just a bit of the target, same road though. Had to make it more accurate, Dennis and Perry were so worried I was swimming in the lake. :D

My push pin is a little off. It happens to point to a location at a friends house. It is in the creek bottom wild undeveloped park area in the direction that the bees fly to all summer so I am fine where the pin is stuck.

Yesterday I was called to collect a swarm. It had settled in the space between a sliding window and its outside shutter. It was a nice sized swarm and a good catch. I hived it from inside the room and though I didn't see the queen, I immediately knew when she was in the hive, because of the change in behavior of the bees. At night I came back to move it to its new location---smack dab under the point of my location pin about ten meters from my front door. It replaces a hive that was there last year and absconded late in the autumn. Actually, I placed it on top of another swarm I had collected earlier (one deep broodbox on top of another deep broodbox). My plans are to unite the two swarms in a few days, giving the extra queen to my grandson, to replace some of his winter losses. The strong united family should give me a crop of honey as early as the spring extraction.

.......LOL ef!!! and congrats on the swarm!
-
Sounds like a good catch, ef. Well done.
In Israel, how does Joe Public get in touch with a swarm collector ? Is it by word of mouth, local authority or some other means ?
-
To be quite honest---I don't know. In my case it's pretty much by word of mouth. I've never registered with any organization (police dep't, fire dep't etc.) but in my nearby neighborhood I guess I'm known as the beekeeper who likes to catch swarms. I've certainly been doing it for long enough (since 1972).
I was called again today about a swarm that had moved into a wall, but declined to collect it. I gave a few pacifying words of assurance to the caller, figuring that right now I don't have the time or the available equipment. If there is any trouble and I get called again, I can always set up a trap-out.
