Title: Swarm call
Post by: brooksbeefarm on May 09, 2015, 11:14:45 pm
A friend called me 7:00pm Thursday and said he had two swarms in his apple trees? So i went to see and get them, sure enough there was two swarm 30ft apart in different trees, one was small about the sizes of a cantaloupe the other one was twice that sizes or more. Easy swarm's, stood in the back of my pick- up to get them, the only thing i can think of is a swarm and after swarm? He had me walk to the back of his house where he said two days before he saw what he thought was bag worms on a bush but they were gone  He had never seen a swarm before but seen the smaller swarm come in as he was putting his boat away after fishing and gave me a call :yes:I don't recall going on a swarm call with two swarms that close together? Jack
PS, i told him he has 2 quarts of honey coming. 8)

Nice! I would be on cloud nine to see two at the same time! Did you take any pics or video?  I am due for some good catches.  It's been a fail week for catching them.

No pictures it was to dark and cloudy anyway, my wife went with me and we had a good visit afterward with Gary and Donna. Gary used to sing with Speed Haworth (sp?)Out at Crystal Cave in Greene co. Mo. don't know if any of you ever heard of him and his uncle Slim Wilson? Jack

Isn't it great when people call and all you have to do is stand in the back of a truck and get them. That's almost as good as getting one off a blue berry bush. ;D

If you want to give Gary and Donna their two quarts this year, (and save yourself the equipment and efforts involved with managing and overwintering two hives), you could consider thw possibility of uniting the two swarms into one larger family.

I combined the small swarm with a nuc that i had put in a 10 frame deep and found it was queenless. Being a after swarm the queen could be a virgin ? Time will tell. Jack

No need to wait---if the queen is from an after swarm, she's a virgin.
