Title: how long will unattended brood last.
Post by: rober on May 22, 2015, 03:30:23 pm
I just did a removal. there is a lot of brood that I'd like to rubberband into frames. the weather is cool
( 70's ). how long will this brood survive without being in a hive???

I would guess it is a matter of minutes, not hours.  Dehydration can affect grafted larva in ten minutes.  I don't remember reading a direct answer to your question.  That said, try it and see if it works...capped brood is a whole different ball game.  :-)

I should have said capped brood. I didn't have time to put it in frames when I did the removal as I also had 2 swarm calls to go to. I put the comb into cardboard nuc boxes. when I opened them late this afternoon the brood was actually still covered with bees so I think it will be alright. I framed it up & put it into a nuc & added one of the new swarms. with all of the swarm & removal calls I've run out of woodenware & frames of drawn comb. i'll be spending this weekend building woodenware & assembling frames.

well the brood survived. checked that swarm today & most of the brood has hatched.  she isn't laying yet but I did see a queen. they're housed in a 2 story 5 frame nuc. i'm building more boxes & ordered more frames. I've caught so many swarms I've run out of gear.

Have you called them?  I would. You have nothing to lose by doing so..

If they refused to help me, I would tape up the box and return it to them with a note.. that you will be contacting the BBB and Attourney General. In the future you will be informing all nearby beekeepers of their lack of quality and lack of assistance, etc, etc..

Mistakes happen, it is only the companies that refuse to fix those mistakes that we all need to stop ordering from.   I ordered Black plastic foundation from Brushy Mountain...  that fall when I started making frames I opened it up, and found it was the yellowish foundation...  I sent it back, they sent me the black.. it was three months later..     Deal with the companies that help fix problems and we will all be better off.

I was shorted some things on an order & I named the vender on this board. since I'm still trying to work this out I decided it was out of place to name them before this is resolved. if I do not get ant satisfaction I will call them out. for the rest  of this thread I'm sticking to the topic of bees.
