Title: Polypropolene Hive Bodies
Post by: Gary on January 06, 2014, 10:04:13 am
Need 8 more hive bodies to finish the spring requirement and I noticed the poly hive bodies in the latest journal. They come with or without an insulated add on. Has anyone used them and how would you rate them compared to wood?

Actually, I think Robo here uses them. I bought a couple of mini-nucs for me and my son but have yet to actually put bees in them. The stuff is tough though, bet I could drive on the lids and not break 'em.

My humble opinion. Just like plastic frames, I don't like the fact that they will not ever decay  8)

Perry,

I use polystyrene and so are your nucs.  He is asking about polypropylene which is a hard plastic.

Hi Gary,
No one I know of uses them in this part of the state.  If they do, they don't advertise it.   Everyone tends to be pretty traditional.  On a whim, last spring, I purchased one of those telescoping covers that are made from one piece of hard white plastic.  I believe it's hollow and it has slots in the bottom so that you don't have to worry about condensation.  So far, so good.  I will say you can really see the ticks trying to hide under the lid.
I wonder about those insulation panels that snap on the hive body.  Could that be a place for small hive beetle to hide?
They certainly are affordable and easy to put together.  Looks like they would be a little easier on the back.  Shipping costs would have to be cheaper.

I bought one too just out of curiosity.  It's very light weight.  And I think it lets light through to help discourage SHB.

Hey SlowModem, For the life of me I can't think of the name of the lid.  Do you know yours?  I'd go look, but that hive is about 25 miles away.  I didn't realize that mine let a little light in.

That's what I have too, Greg.  I bought mine from a local beekeeping supplier.
