Title: Big City BeeKeeper
Post by: revdenver on January 09, 2014, 12:02:16 am
Hello from Denver Colorado.
Guess this is where the aliens took everyone from WOB (sorry inside joke from an outsider)
The Big City only allows us 2 hives.
I have one 5 frame hive 4 boxes high and one 10 frame hive 3 boxes high.
All my boxes are deeps.
My bees are high country mutts (survivors)

Look forward to meeting you all and sharing info with everyone

I was actually trying to save her hubby...   I imagined her fighting to get the cover off, prying away with the hive tool, getting frustrated with it, then he walks up behind her and asks why dinner isnt ready.....    Poor fella wouldnt KNOW what hit him!!!

Welcome,

Of course while the city says only two hives, I bet they don't say how many boxes that hive may have.

Imagine a hive 10 boxes high, that just happens to have 5 entrances  :D.

Bit more work to inspect , but will work.     Other side is to go top bar , about 8 feet long, with 5 entrances

Innovation , what you get when you visit world wide beekeeping

Rev Zulu has a good point. In the spring start that nuc from each hive and place it on a solid divide with an entrance to the back once you have a mated queen place a queen excluder over the bottom brood chambers then a honey super followed by an other queen excluder with a piece of news paper for a slower introduction of the 2 colonies, the 2nd queen nuc or single is placed above it foll0wed by another queen excluder with a honey super and the inner cover with the top entrance open. what you will have is a 2 queen hive. The vigor of the hive with having 2 queens working for you is incredible.
In mid summer beginning to mid summer pull all the queen excluders and place the top brood chamber over the bottom 2 and let the queens duke it out or find the bottom queen and extinguish her and you will have a new queen each year.
