UPCOMING FREE WEBINAR!
Effective use of Oxalic Acid to Suppress Varroa Mites
Thursday March 17th 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm EST.
Beekeepers are assessing their mite levels as their hives come out of winter. One treatment to suppress the Varroa mite is Oxalic Acid. With its high efficacy and low risk of contamination, many beekeepers are looking to use it this year. We have brought in an expert panelist, Marion Ellis Ph.D, to better explain the use of Oxalic Acid. As an entomologist, his research into the effects of varroa and other parasites on honey bee colonies have given beekeepers insight into better hive management.
Webinar is free to the public but pre-registration is required. Click the link below to register.

Well, did anyone listen in? I was surprised at his stance of only using QA when the hive was brood less. His findings were that three successive treatments with sealed brood involved was more or less a waste of time.

I believe one treatment then test.

For some reason I though the webbinar started at seven, was I surprise to find it ending when I got on, just as well because because I had a hard time unstanding the way he talked.

I think that was the moderater, who was having feedback problems. I think he said the discussion is posted on webinar.com (might've misunderstood because of the echo lol).

I listened and being a newbee did not think it was a waste of time. The more information I hear, the more I retain. The feedback was quite annoying that's for sure.

I finally found the link to the webinar if anyone (like me) that wanted to take notes and missed a few, or didn't catch it.

Thanks Les and rwlaw for posting this great webinar. I have had the pleasure of hearing Marion Ellis speak on several occasions. He's the expert on varroa. I intend to watch all of this, but it may take a while. If I am not mistaken, Ellis explains mite counts, how many mites your colony can live with and at what point the mites will have an adverse effect on the colony. In other words, treating every time you find a mite on your sticky board is excessive.
rwlaw: Yes, treating when there is brood will only kill the mites that are on adult bees. It's like an iceberg. Beekeepers need to understand the life cycle of the varroa, which Ellis explains.

I watched this video from the brushymountain youtube site. I treat more than 3 times when my hives have brood in them. If you keep treating with this stuff you will knock your mite load down. I rated this video a C-.
