Title: Advantech
Post by: rcannon on March 27, 2016, 09:39:22 pm
I've been following some guys that post on Beesource for some time that have been building hives, tops and bottom boards from Advantech. Advantech is a engineered sheet lumber that is used for subflooring. Its water proof and doesn't warp. One of those guys on the other forum say they've used it for years and speak highly of it. He has some he's never even painted.
I picked up 3 sheets from Lowe's @$26/sheet. From 3 sheets, I made 15 tops, 15 bottom boards and a 8 frame hive body. That's not bad for $79.
I'm interested to see how they hold up down here. But for the price, it's worth a try. I use MDO plywood quite a bit, but this stuff is half the price.

I have used Advantech for hive bodies and so far so good. It machines pretty well but not as clean as good lumber. It is definitely heavier.

When I built my house in Maine I put that stuff on the roof.  I was told at Menards that they do not make it anymore when I tried to buy it for the purpose your speaking of....
I took the left over pieces and built a small dock to fish off of at our pond...    The kids were ten when I built that dock, they are 27 now..  I was in Maine last summer and the dock is still there. the pressure treated legs and 2x's are rotting badly, but the advantech plywood is holding the whole thing together. It was never painted. I slapped some of the sticky sand strips on it here and there for traction, they have long since peeled away.. apparently they didnt like the waxy stuff the wood is impregnated with...

I'll take some pictures tomorrow. It's certainly not pretty, but its functionall. It is heavier than dimensional lumber, but no heavier than MDO plywood.

I have had no good experience with it in the weather, had it as roof layer on back porch and had to remove it shingles and all and install a metal roof, it absorb the wet weather warp and sage, and it was painted.

If you painted it then it coulnt have been advantech????   The stuff I had was hard to handle because it was waxy, no way paint would have stuck to it.. as stated above, even the perma glue on the stair tread traction strips didnt stick to it.. NOT that they couldnt have changed it in the last 20+ years from the stuff I remember.

Apparently they did change it. the 5/8 "Advantech" I put on my roof was plywood. Tongue and groove so it fit SQUARE and showed just how far off I was on my measurements...
