Title: Newbe in atlanta ga
Post by: vvand111 on May 02, 2016, 09:53:17 am
Getting my first Nuc on Wednesday. I have been reading and learning over the internet for about 6 months. I have all the equipment and supplies that I feel is necessary. I have probably bought too much but I figure I needed to go all in or not go at all.  A little nervous but excited as is the wife. Glad to be here as this looks like a great forum for the kind of advice I will undoubtedly be needing. Thanks to all of you guys that are willing to share.

Any words of wisdom for a rookie are always welcome.

Hey vvand111!  Welcome aboard!  This is a good place to bee.  Words of wisdom?  Not so much.  Suggestions?  Ask questions, try to hook up with a beekeeper and/or bee club in your area and have fun!  Ted

If you asked 6 months ago I am sure some one would have said Find a different hobby. Keeping bees has become a lot more challenging over the last 30 years. When I started bees kept them selves. and survived despite what we did to or for them.
It is encouraging to see so many new beekeepers coming aboard to do their part in helping the honey bees and all wild pollinators.
There is a wealth of Knowledgeable people on this site, Ask questions, post pictures and observations of what you are seeing, We will do our best at explaining what is happening and guiding you through your first years of beekeeping.
I wish you the best of luck vvand111

No such thing. You'll be short of equipment before you realize it! :D

Great attitude when dealing with bees, I like it!

Hi vvand111  :)  Let me tell ya something... When I got on this forum my poor hive was a mess! These people worked with me over a couple of seasons and helped me straighten it right up. And, everyone here is great for teaching swarm prevention, swarm chasing, and swarm hiving. Trust me on this one  ;) 8) Welcome

vvand111:

Your attitude about going all in is wonderful.  it's reminiscent of the sports saying, "go hard or go home."  Like Perry said, if you stay in beekeeping you will need and need and need.  There should really be a 12-step program for beekeepers.  Anyway, it's a fun thing, and this is a really nice place for you to be.  Again, welcome aboard.

Glad you signed up with the forum and chose to be a posting member.  Keep those questions coming and see how many answers you get---you'll be amazed sometimes by the number and variety of different answers you'll to a question!  Which just goes to show you that beekeeping isn't an "only one way to do it" activity.  Maybe if the bees would read the literature about them, they'd know exactly what to do.  Unfortunately, they can sometimes surprise even the most experienced beekeepers with the things they do.
Rule number one: Expect the unexpected.   :o  8)

Welcome aboard.......my suggestions are keep a journal and ask questions.  Although, if you ask a question you will probably get 10 opinions but part of beekeeping is making decisions so you will have to decide which advice to take.  Best of luck!
