Title: My first swarm of 2016
Post by: Perry on May 25, 2016, 03:17:05 pm
A bit of work to get it but not too bad, although I did actually fall out of the tree at one point. Didn't break anything but my pride. :D
It was from one of my hives so I went through the ones at this yard and found where. I then made up 2 more nucs, one with some ripe cells, and another with a virgin running around on a frame, and left 2 other virgins in the original hive.
When you find a lemon, make some lemonade! ;D

PS. been raining off and on for 2 days and supposed to rain ever day till next week? I'm bored and thought i'd jerk your chain buddy. Jack

Rain has that effect. :D
When I fell, it was only about 5 feet, but I had just put the lid on the cardboard box I knocked the bees into, and as I was going down I was NOT gonna let it go. I ended up falling on my guts, but there is plenty enough there to soften the blow! Lid never came off although the bees buzzed a bit.

My biggest worry is that I will miss a swarm if it happens.  Does it work to put an empty hive just a short distance from the other hives (20-25 ft or so).    Is there a chance if they do swarm they will make there way into it?

Yes, there's a chance, but there's a better chance you will get a swarm from a neighbor a 1/4 mile away. Either way, you will have another hive.

Whoo hoo! And so it begins as my winds down.  I have seen this pattern over the last four years with you northern folks and us Yankees...  Oh, and wish you had a video of the fun you were having in the tree...

Do not risk life and limb going after swarms they are not worth the pain and suffering. A good buddy of mine was in a tree standing on a branch collecting a swarm He was cutting the branch the swarm was on and when it cut off the extra weight of the branch and swarm caused the branch to break. He ended up with a broken back, broken wrist on one arm and the other arm was broken also with shoulder damage so his arm was propped out from the shoulder. 6 months of recovery and still to this day he has limitations with mobility.

Oh yeah, glad your OK....

If someone Does see you, you get up and nod and look bemused, look up at the tree, and down at the ground etc...   They will think you did it on purpose and it wont be as funny to them....  Unless of course things leak out when you hit, then there is no stopping the mirth from witnesses....

When I turned 50 Sweet Wife made me quit breaking horses and mules. Please don't tell her there is the possibility of being thrown by a bee swarm. :)
